Title: Architecture Of the Greek World

Architecture Of the Greek World
  • By Nick Mead

Doric Style
  • Of the three columns found in Greece, Doric
columns are the most basic and undecorative, with
a square and circular capital and a plain 20
sided shaft. There is no base to give it a
unique design. Which leaves this column with a
very straight-forward but powerful presence in
    its design.

3
  • Cornice- The very top of the building that binds
the walls and roof, usually very decorative
  • Frieze- A decorative band that connects the
ceiling of the building to the roof
  • Architrave- a solid block that rests directly on
    top of a column
  • Capital- The top of the column that connects
directly to the architrave, usually decorative
  • Shaft- The body of the column

Ionic Style
  • Ionic columns were taller than Doric compared to
their height, and also had what is called
entasis, which is a convex swelling to prevent an
illusion of concavity in a column shaft. The
bases were large and textured with a profile like
that of stacked rings. Ionic capitals consist of
    a scroll-like portion above a attractive shaft
portion. The Ionic style is a little more
decorative in the capital, and also instead of
the single scene drawings of the Doric style in
the frieze, the Ionic had a continuous band of
drawings depicted. The Ionic cornice is
practically the equivalent of its Doric
    counterpart with some minor differences.

The Corinthian Style
  • The Corinthian columns are the most decorative
and usually the most appealing. On Corinthian
style they also use entasis. The Corinthian
    capitals have flowering, leaf-like structures
below a lesser scroll design than that of Ionian
capitals. The shaft has indented sides. Unlike
the Doric and Ionian roofs, which are at a slant,
the Corinthian roofs are flat. The Corinthian
frieze is the same as the Ionic frieze, but on a
    smaller scale.

Buildings of the Acropolis, Athens
  • Temple of Athena, Parthenos
  • Parthenos and Parthenon
  • The Propylaia
  • The Propylaia Grounds
  • The Erechtheion
  • Great Site!!

12
The Propylaia (438-420)
  • During the beginning of Athens there was a
rough, constricted road which led up to the top
of the Acropolis. The Athenian people had decided
that this road was not a reasonable climb to the
Acropolis, so a ramp was built. The Propylaia was
designed and built by Mnesikles from 437-432 B.C.
The Propylaia was the Doric gateway onto the
Acropolis in Athens. It was built on two
different levels, due to the uneven ground. The
Propylaia served as a gateway from the land of
the humans, to the land of the gods on the
Acropolis. In the center, two parallel rows of
three Ionic columns were used, which were taller
than the Doric columns in the front and the rear
of the temple. This helped to balance the
building, since it was required by its two-level
    structure.

13
The Erechtheion
  • The Erechtheion is one of the most highly
ornamental and artistic creations in the entire
    collection of Greek architecture. Constructed
during the Peace of Nikias in 421 B.C. Work on
it seems to have been interrupted after the
continuation of hostilities between Athens and
Sparta. It was built in order to replace the
ancient temple of Athena. It was finally
completed in 406 B.C. The Erechtheion derives its
name to Erechtheus who was a local hero and
    renowned king of Athens

The Greek Household
  • The Greek House Tour
  • The houses in Ancient Greek towns were built from
stone or clay. The roofs of these houses were
covered with tiles, or reeds, and the houses had
either one or two stories. The floors of the
rooms were tiled to keep them cool, although in
winter fires in metal baskets were sometimes
    needed.
  • The houses of ancient Greece were built with high
walls and a strong gate, and the focal point of
    every house was the courtyard.
  • The Greeks basically had furniture built of
several types of wood, which was sometimes
decorated with gold, silver or ivory.
