Time Periods
  • New Stone Age small houses or huts with wooden
    walls around them.
  • Early Bronze Age One big house in the middle
    and small ones around it.
  • Late Bronze Age Palaces, big stone tombs, paved
    roads and bridges, and dams.
  • Greek Dark age palaces were burned, roads,
    bridges, and dams fell apart.
  • Iron Age Temples of houses were built.
  • Classic period more temples bigger and new
    designs Democracy uprised the development of
    public places.
  • Hellenistic Period - Theaters are built, road
    planning comes into the picture.

Mnesicles
  • Active around 440 B.C. Designed Erectheion and
    Propylaia of the Acropolis in Athens.

Ictinus
  • He is credited in the creation of the Parthenon
    in Athens,The Telesterion Temple at Eleusis, and
    the temple of Apollo at Bassai.

Kallikrates
  • Kallikrates worked mainly in Athens and might
    have been the citys architect. He focused on
    technical and managerial aspects of Architecture.

Phidias
  • Phidias supervised all architectural and
    artistic works on the Acropolis in Athens. All
    the exterior sculptures were produced under his
    order. But the enormous statue of Athena in the
    temple was his work.

    colonies in Southern Italy and Sicily.
  • Developed approximately 5th Century B.C.
  • Its capital is plain with fluted columns.

  • Style was founded in Eastern Greece and the
    Islands.
  • Developed approximately 4th Century B.C.
  • Its capital is a scroll like design.

  • Style was rarely used in Greece but seen a lot on
    Roman temples.
  • Developed approximately 4th Century B.C.
  • Its capital is elaborate and decorated with
    acanthus leaves.

  • The Temple of Apollo at Didyma, Turkey was built
    around 300 B.C. The columns were Ionic.

    built around 420 B.C. One of the earliest known
    Ionic Buildings of the Acropolis.

Modern Greek Architecture
  • Sill - boundary frame, used for resting place for
    the the main upright support.
  • Lintel - Upper duplicate of the sill.
  • Truss basis of the roof triangular frame from
    wall to wall.
  • Purlins roof supports that run from the lintel
    to the peak of the roof.
