stage make-up..
  • Face make-up can be traced back to ancient
china when it was used to change the shape of the
face and as decoration. Like costume and
jewellery face make-up was also common in
classical times. In Egypt and Greece make-up was
used to enhance the appearance. By drawing
attention to the good points and away from the
bad points. In a play the opposite could be done
to help establish character. Like costume make-up
can help the actor feel more like the character
and therefore give a more convincing performance.
With the use of stage lighting make-up also has a
practical use, it allows the audience to see
clearly the actors features and expressions.
Stage lighting can also cause colour drain, stage
    make-up can replace this loss.

  • Make-up has become a valuable aid to the
actors interpretation of character. They use it
to achieve particular effect or to emphasise a
    necessary characteristic. Therefore it is
essential that as much thought and concentration
are given to the make-up as to the rest of the
    theatre arts.
