Title: Proposed APAN I2 QBone Activities

1
Proposed APAN I2 QBone Activities
  • CCIRN QoS WG
  • _at_ Orlando IETF43
  • Tuesday, 8 December 1998
  • Doug Pearson (dodpears_at_indiana.edu)
  • Kazunori Konishi (konish_at_lab.kdd.co.jp)

2
Caveats
  • This presentation is
  • not representative of the entire range of APAN
    QoS activities
  • premature - refined plans will be developed in
    the coming weeks

3
Participation in the I2 QBone
  • ...within the context of the Joint Proposal
organized by the International Center for
    Advanced Internet Research (iCAIR).

4
Joint Proposal - Participants
  • APAN - Asia Pacific Advanced Network
  • Centre for Telematics and Infomation Tech., U of
    Twente
  • Electronic Visualization Laboratory, University
    of Illinois, Chicago
  • IBM Thomas Watson Research Center
  • iCAIR/Northwestern University
  • Indiana University
  • KDD - Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co. Ltd.
  • Korea Telecom
  • MREN - Metropolitan Research and Education
    Network
  • Nanyang Technological University
  • National University of Singapore
  • SingAREN
  • STARTAP
  • SURFnet
  • TransPAC

5
Joint Proposal - Objectives
  • Develop an optimal design and early
    implementation of of state-of-the-art QoS
concepts within an international testbed linked
    to the I2 networks.

6
Joint Proposal - Objectives
  • establish a cooperative international effort to
    address issues of
  • common understanding of QoS design
  • definition of types and priorities of
    applications and required resource guarantees
  • management policy options for differentiation of
    service categories, distributed governance and
    resource allocation mechanisms across multiple
    domains

7
Joint Proposal - Objectives
  • establish a cooperative international effort to
    address issues of
  • baseline standards, reference configurations and
    dependability parameters for auditing performance
    to contract
  • common appropriate response to non-compliance and
    priority conflicts
  • bandwidth brokers
  • policy servers

8
Joint Proposal - Applications
  • streaming digital video - I2 DVN
  • persistent infrastructure to provide high-quality
digital video services in the Internet2 community
  • live and stored content
  • IBM VideoCharger technology
  • multicast
  • MPEG1 and MPEG2 at data rates up to 8 Mbps
  • directory services
  • large file systems
  • caching and replication
  • requirement for QoS

9
Joint Proposal - Applications
  • TeleImmersion
  • based on previous experiments of the STAR TAP
TeleImmersion Experiments between EVL and the
Institute of High Performance Computing at the
    National University of Singapore
  • merging of audio and video conferencing with
    collaborative virtual reality

10
Joint Proposal - Network
  • spans from Asia-Pacific through the US to the
    Netherlands
  • APAN
  • CTIT
  • IBM research center
  • MREN
  • SingAREN
  • STAR TAP
  • SURFnet
  • TransPAC
  • campus networks

QoS Implementation and Research
  • mechanisms
  • experiments to study the effect of AF and EF PHBs
    on application performance
  • Cisco mechanisms of CAR, DWRED and WFQ
  • absence of mechanism to perform traffic shaping
    on egress??

13
QoS Implementation and Research
  • measurement
  • behavior of individual and aggregate flows and of
    mechanisms, e.g. queueing, discard...
  • IPPM measurement probes
  • RTFM at selected sites
  • end-to-end RTCP feedback
  • OC3mon?
  • multi-domain
  • SLAs (Service Level Agreements)
  • TCAs (Traffic Conditioning Agreements)

14
QoS Implementation and Research
  • brokers
  • AAA
  • participate in development of bandwidth brokers
  • the whiteboard interdomain bandwidth broker
  • policy control functions coupled with admission
    control

15
QoS Implementation and Research
  • network management
  • investigate what management information needs to
    be exchanged between domains
  • contribute to development of MIBs
  • investigate the problem of accounting
  • auditing of performance to contract
  • second order effects
  • concern multicast is not addressed

Closing
  • CCIRN-QoS group should encourage its member
networks to collaborate with Internet2 QBone
    project
  • Other CCIRN groups such as measurement and
multicast should help Internet2 QBone for global
    collaborations/operations
