AY 2003/2004 ECE3 Streaming Advisory
Department of Electrical Computer Engineering
by AP Loh
2
Brief Overview
  • Broad areas of specialization
  • What does streaming involve?
  • What are the compulsory requirements?
  • How technical electives are organized
  • Rules of specialization
  • Recommended tracks
  • Recommended schedules

3
Broad Areas of Specialization
  • Communications Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Control and Automation
  • Electrical Energy Systems
  • Information Processing
  • Microelectronics
  • Microwave Communications

4
Streaming involves ..
  • Choice of electives in semesters 5, 6, 7 8
  • Some modules are compulsory
  • Choices must satisfy some rules
  • Choose wisely to ensure both breadth and
  • depth in your BEng program
  • 23 tracks are recommended to assist you in
  • your choices
  • Schedule of modules depends on whether
  • you are going away on Long Term IA (LIA)

5
Compulsory Requirements
  • 6 Essential TMs
  • EE1000 Indept Study
  • EE2010 and EE2011
  • EE2001 Miniproject
  • EE3001 Miniproject
  • EE4001 FYP/Thesis
  • 3 Essential NTMs
  • HR2002
  • EG1424 Law
  • 1 free CFM
  • SC1101E Making Sense of Society
  • BH1001 Management Organisation
  • BH1102 Accounting

elective modules to achieve breadth and depth
this is in addition to others that are normally
done in the lower years
6
Organization of Technical Electives
  • Organized into 8 different concentrations
  • Each organized into breadth depth modules
  • Breadth modules that are core to the area
  • Depth modules that are more specialized
  • Total of 61 elective modules available
  • - 24 breadth modules
  • - 37 depth modules
  • Only 9 need be taken over 3 or 4 semesters
  • Some rules apply for their choices

7
Examples
  • Communications
  • Breadth
  • EE3101 Digital Signal Proc
  • EE3103 Communications
  • Depth
  • EE4101 RF Communications
  • EE4102 Digital Comms
  • EE4103 Coding Theory Apps
  • EE4104 Microwave Ccts Dev
  • EE4109 Spread Spectrum Comms
  • EE4110 MIC MMIC Design
  • EE4112 HF Techniques
  • Control Automation
  • Breadth

8
Rules to achieve breadth depth BEng (EE)
  • (a) Breadth requirements
  • at least 4 from 4 different concentrations
  • (b) Depth requirements
  • at least 4 depth modules
  • (c) 1 last module may be breadth or depth

9 electives
Note that at least 18 MCs of electives must be
chosen from those with EE codes ie EEXXXX
9
Rules to achieve breadth depth BEng (CPE)
  • (a) Breadth requirements
  • at least 4 in total 3 from Computer
  • Engg and Info Proc 1 from other conc.
  • (b) Depth requirements
  • at least 4 in total 3 from CE and/or IP
  • 1 from any conc.
  • (c) 1 last module may be breadth or depth
  • from any conc.

9 electives
Note that at least 12 MCs of electives must be
chosen from those with EE codes ie EEXXXX
10
Exemptions for students going on 6 month or long
term IA
  • For those going on 6 month or long term IA, you
are exempted from EE3001 and one technical
    module.
  • For this group of students, you should do EE2001
    in sem 5.
  • The technical module that you are exempted from
may come from either (a), (b) or (c).For CPE
students, note that only the 1 from other conc.
or 1 from any conc. module can be exempted, not
the CE and/or IP required modules.

11
Recommended Tracks
  • Total of 23 tracks recommended
  • Each track gives some ideas of what modules are
    impt
  • Each track recommends 4-7 modules core to the
    track
  • All modules listed in each track are NOT
    compulsory
  • May mix and match modules to create your own
    track
  • Ensure that rules are satisfied (4 breadth 4
    depth 1)
  • Choose wisely to ensure breadth depth
