October 2004 Membership Meeting

• Discussion validated central themes being put
  forward as strategic directionsi.e., what ARL
  needs to dobut also surfaced need to be more
  explicit about how ARL pursue the strategic
  directions.
• Suggestion that Strategic Plan acknowledge more
  explicitly value of ARL collaborating with other
  organizations.
• Discussion of need to find right approach for ARL
  to take regarding organizational and professional
  development as well as diversity issues,
  recognizing that ARL is not the only organization
  positioned to address these issues and that the
  ARL Financial Framework outlines a variety of
  financial strategies, besides membership dues,
  for supporting ARL activities.

• Guiding Principles given additional emphasis by
  renaming and relocating them in the report.
• Recommendations for transition elaborated by
• adding Redefining ARL Core Programs, and
• expanding Organizational Commitment.

• Scholarly Communication revised to clarify its
  intent, and to
• emphasize barrier-free access,
• emphasize community service, and
• make forging alliances an explicit outcome.
• Information/Public Policy revised to refine its
  outcomes.

• Teaching, Learning, Research revised to
• make explicit changes in the age and ethnicity of
  student populations, and in their expectations
  and learning styles
• make explicit the renewed focus of universities
  on service to their communities
• make forging alliances an explicit outcome
• make some of the other outcomes more concrete
• add a strategy re developing library
  professionals with expertise needed to lead and
  participate in new partnerships with faculty and
  researchers.

Onward to Implementation

• Final report of Strategic Planning Task Force
  submitted to ARL Board in November 2004.
• ARL Board accepted report and established
  Strategic Plan Implementation Team
• (I Team), chaired by Shirley Baker.
