Title: Three Methods of Baptizing:

1
Three Methods of Baptizing
  • Baptism may be administered by
  • immersion,
  • infusion, or
  • aspersion.

2
  • Immersion means plunging the candidate into
    water.
  • Infusion means pouring the water.
  • Aspersion means sprinkling the water.

3
  • All these three methods are valid, but our
    present practice is by
  • infusion
  • or
  • immersion.

4
How Is Baptism Administered?
  • Baptism is administered by pouring water on the
forehead of the person to be baptized, saying
while pouring it "(N.), I BAPTIZE YOU IN THE
NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE
    HOLY SPIRIT."

5
  • Baptism cannot be repeated because it imprints an
indelible mark or character on the soul, to
remain from then on through all eternity.

6
Conditional Baptism
  • If there is doubt as to whether one has been
baptized, or whether Baptism has been validly
conferred, and if the doubt remains even after a
serious investigation, Baptism is to be conferred
upon this person conditionally. (CIC 869, 1 ).

7
The following churches are usually considered to
administer a valid Baptism in the Philippines
  • Lutheran Church in the Philippines (LCP)
  • Philippine Episcopal Church (PEC)
  • United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP)
  • Iglesia Evangelica Metodista en las Islas
    Filipinas (IEMELIF)
  • United Methodist Church in the Philippines (UMCP)
  • Convention of the Philippine Baptist Churches
    (CPBC)
  • Presbyterian Church

8
  • The Iglesia ni Kristo (INK), Jehovah's Witnesses,
and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
Saints (Mormons) do not have valid Baptisms since
they do not even believe in the divinity of our
    Lord Jesus Christ.

9
  • Philippine Independent Church or Iglesia Filipina
    Independiente
  • To be examined individually.

10
Imminent Danger of Death
  • Imminent danger of death and especially at the
moment of death, when no priest or deacon is
available, ANY MEMBER OF THE FAITHFUL, indeed
anyone with the right intention, may, and
    sometimes MUST, administer Baptism.

11
Rite of Baptism in Danger of Death
  • Water, even if though not blessed, is prepared
    for the rite.
  • The parents, godparents, and if possible, some
friends and neighbors of the family gather around
    the one to be baptized.

12
  • Opening Prayer.
  • Ask God to look with mercy on the child who is
about to receive the grace of baptism.
  • Profession of Faith
  • Rite of Baptism
  • N., I baptize you in the name of the Father, and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
  • Our Father

13
At the moment of Death -
  • It is sufficient for the minister to omit all
other ceremonies and pour water on the child
    while saying the usual words.

14
Children who have died without baptism.
  • The 1992 Catechism of the Catholic Church states
"As regards children who have died without
Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the
mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites
    for them.
  • Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that
all men should be saved, and Jesus' tenderness
toward children which caused him to say "Let the
children come to me, do not hinder them," allows
us to hope that there is a way of salvation for
children who have died without Baptism.
  • All the more urgent is the Church's call not to
prevent little children coming to Christ through
    the gift of holy Baptism."

15
LIMBO
  • Catechism of the Catholic Church does not mention
    LIMBO.
  • LIMBO -- understood to be the abode of souls who
enjoy the happiness that would have been our
destiny if human beings had not been elevated to
    the supernatural order.

16
  • The limbo of infants would therefore be a state
or place of perfect happiness, but without the
    beatific vision of God.

17
  • We may trust that, in Gods mercy, innocent
children, whether born or unborn, do reach heaven.

18
TIME FOR THEBAPTISM OF CHILDREN
  • As for the time of baptism, the first
consideration is the welfare of the child, that
it may not be deprived of the benefit of the
    sacrament
  • Then the health of the mother must be considered,
so that, if at all possible, she too may be
    present.

19
When And How Are Converts Baptized?
  • Validly baptized converts are required to make a
Formal Abjuration of their past errors and a
Solemn Profession of the Catholic Faith.

20
Anointing With Chrism
  • God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has
freed you from sin, given you a new birth by
water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomed you into
his holy people. He now anoints you with the
chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed
Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always
as a member of his body, sharing everlasting
    life.

21
The anointing is for.
  • SELECTION
  • The anointing is the way in which God makes
divine selections, promotes, and honors an
    individual among many.
  • Consecration Sanctification
  • In Numbers 7, the tabernacle with all its
regalia, instruments, vessels and furniture, was
    consecrated by anointing.

22
  • For Appointment
  • The public and ceremonial Seating of a King.
  • Healing
  • For blessing
  • People are anointed to
  • Serve or Minister
  • Lead
  • Do the work of God

23
  • In Jesus Christ, the plan of God to deliver
    mankind is fulfilled.
  • Jesus is anointed (or chosen) of God as the One
and only Christ of God to deliver salvation.
  • The anointing with sacred chrism, perfumed oil
consecrated by the bishop, signifies the gift of
the Holy Spirit to the newly baptized, who has
become a Christian, that is, one "anointed" by
the Holy Spirit, incorporated into Christ.

24
Christ is a
  • PRIEST
  • PROPHET
  • KING

25
Clothing with White Garment
  • N., you have become a new creation, and have
clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white
garment the outward sign of your Christian
dignity. With your family and friends to help you
by word and example, bring that dignity unstained
into the everlasting life of heaven.

26
  • The white garment symbolizes that the person
baptized has "put on Christ, has risen with
    Christ.

27
  • The new white garment expresses the purity of
the soul that has been washed from sin.
  • It recalls also the shining robe in which Christ
    appeared at the Transfiguration.
  • There is now a likeness between the one baptized
and the transfigured Lord. St. Paul calls it a
    putting on of Christ.

28
Lighted Candle
  • Receive the light of Christ.
  • Parents and godparents, this light is entrusted
to you to be kept burning brightly. This child of
yours has been enlightened by Christ. He (she) is
to walk always as a child of the light. May he
(she) keep the flame of faith alive in his (her)
heart. When the Lord comes, may he (she) go out
to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly
    kingdom.

29
  • The candle, lit from the Easter candle, signifies
that Christ has enlightened the baptized. In him
the baptized are "the light of the world.
  • It was a constant reminder for the Christian to
live and die by the light of Christ. Thus the
candle becomes a symbol of the perseverance of
the baptized soul until Christ's return.

30
Lord's Prayer
  • The newly baptized is now, in the only Son, a
child of God entitled to say the prayer of the
    children of God "Our Father."

31
  • The solemn blessing concludes the celebration of
    Baptism.
  • At the Baptism of newborns the blessing of the
    mother occupies a special place.
