6Demonstration of The Kings Power
- Response To Sermon On The Mount
- Response to His Sermon Mt 728-29
- Unlike the scribes, who simply interpreted the
law, Jesus - spoke as One who had the right to make the law!
- I say unto you , But I tell you
- Jesus taught as one having authority, not as one
who appealed to authority. - His insincere adversaries will challenge and
question His authority by what authority do
you - Great Commission All authority in heaven and
on earth has been given to me
7Demonstration of The Kings Power
- At the end of our last study, we discussed Jesus
teaching - as one having authority (728).
- This lesson begins to establish evidence of
Christs Divine - authority on the basis of Divine power. It was
Jesus who - said Ye shall know them by their fruits (716),
and it is - Jesus who understands that His fruit (works) must
be - consistent with His claim.
- If evidence of His divinity is provided by divine
power, and - His claim to be the Son of God is established and
- confirmed with true miracles at His command, then
to deny - His authority is inexcusable (112-5 20-24).
- Due to His extraordinary teaching on the
mountain, great - multitudes followed Him. The love, mercy, and
forgiveness - that He taught, will now be put to practice and
on display.
8Demonstration of The Kings Power
- The Leper is Cleansed Mt 81-4
- Leper worships Jesus and calling Him Lord
- If thou wilt challenges Jesus desire in
helping the leper, not - His power.
- Jesus put forth His hand, and touched him,
- Jesus gives the leper 5 commands.
- 1) What does Lord mean? the leper addressed
Jesus with this title. -
- 2) With Jesus having the power to simply speak
and make the leper whole, why do you suppose
Jesus touched him?

see. Used to get - our attention.

or spots below the surface of the skin, skin with
hair in infected area turning white or becoming
raw flesh. Could eat away the hands and feet

- Questions
- 1) What does Lord mean? the leper addressed
Jesus with this title. - kurios supreme in authority, controller. Also
Acts 236 - With Jesus having the power to simply speak and
make the leper whole, why do you suppose Jesus
touched him? - Demonstrated His mercy and compassion 57.
- Touch is an understood way of showing sympathy
and affection.
12Demonstration of The Kings Power
- The Centurions Servant is Healed Mt 85-13
- Jesus highly commends the centurions faith.
- A man under authority
- Servant was healed the same hour.
- 3) What relevance is there between the centurion
and Jesus? - 4) What noble quality does the centurion really
have? - 5) How do you explain verse 12?
13Demonstration of The Kings Power
- The Centurions Servant is Healed Mt 85-13
- Context
- Capernaum village of Nahum.
- On the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
- Mark 91 His own city reference when Jesus
returned - Centurion Roman officer in charge of 100 men. A
position known for their loyalty, strength, and
leadership. Acts 101 271 - Luke 72-5 (read in class)
14Demonstration of The Kings Power
- The Centurions Servant is Healed Mt 85-13 (read
in class) - Jesus highly commends the centurions faith.
- Speak the word only
- A man under authority
- As he commands soldiers, Jesus commanded, by
authority, healing over sickness. Proof of Divine
power. Power needed to heal his servant. - Servant was healed the same hour.
-
- 3) What relevance is there between the centurion
and Jesus? - Faith, Authority, Compassion, Humility,
Servitude - 4) What noble quality does the centurion really
have? - Faith is his quality not his authority.
- Jesus marveled I have not found so great faith,
no, not in Israel - Also - Compassion on a slave.
- How do you explain verse 12?
- This Gentiles faith allows Jesus to make the
point that His kingdom would be open to all. Not
only Gentile inclusion, but Jews would be
excluded.
15Demonstration of The Kings Power
- Peters Mother-In-Law is Healed Mt 814-15
- Healing that was not requested.
- Keep in mind that women, by Romans, were
generally despised. Perhaps treated as second
class among the Jews. - Consider 1st 4 recorded miracles of healing in
Matthew Leper, Gentile, Slave, Woman - She arose, and ministered unto them see Q6
- 6) How complete was the recovery from her fever
(puresso to be on fire)? - So complete and full that she arose and
served them. - Also, note again (I believe implied) that
healing was done instantaneously. - A true miracle.
- 7) What valuable lesson could we make of this
about our prayers for the sick - and their healing?
- Pray for the will of God. Pray that we might be
healed to serve!
16Demonstration of The Kings Power
- Demons and Disease Mt 816-17
- Context when even was come word spread
quickly after Peters mother-in-law. - On Isaiah 534 Thou the text of Isa 53 is the
Suffering Messiah, Matthew applies v4 to the
power of Jesus to heal physical sickness. It
would be wrong to conclude that Jesus died for
our physical infirmities in addition to dying for
our sins. - Christ died at Calvary for our sin(s), not our
physical sickness (1 Pt 224) - We should not pervert the gospel and come away
with the Pentecostal twist and apply healing in
the atonement - Devils were cast out.
- That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by
Esaias the prophet. - Matthew continues to provide prophetic
fulfillment to establish Jesus as the Son of God. - All that were sick were healed.
- 8) Search the bible and write a short sentence
about what you know about demons. - True demon possession (physical dwelling in body
and controlling behavior) was exclusive to New
Testament writings. - Some believe demons were apostate angels (2 Pt
24 Jude 6) - They were unclean spirits
17Demonstration of The Kings Power
- Demons and Disease Mt 816-17
- Q8 Continued
- Jam 47 Be subject therefore unto God but
resist the devil, and he will flee from you. - Eph 611 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye
may be able to stand against the wiles of the
devil. - Eph 616 withal taking up the shield of faith,
wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the
fiery darts of the evil one. - Zech 131-2 In that day there shall be a
fountain opened to the house of David and to the
inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for
uncleanness. And it shall come to pass in that
day, saith Jehovah of hosts, that I will cut off
the names of the idols out of the land, and they
shall no more be remembered and also I will
cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass
out of the land.
18Demonstration of The Kings Power
- The Demands of Discipleship Mt 818-22 (read in
class) - Jesus seeks a retreat from the multitudes.
- Perhaps another good reason to say tell no
man - Scribe who declares I will follow thee
withersoever thou goest. - Count the cost before you sign up! Mt 510-12
- 1st Time Jesus refers to Himself, in Matthew, as
the Son of Man Dan 713-14 - Disciple who request to first go and bury my
father (Lk959-62) - One of the highest forms of filial duty.
- Elisha when called by Elijah (1 Ki 1919-21)
- Even priest were exempt from defilement to
perform this duty Lev211-3 - Point what was once considered religious
exemption from duty, is no longer an option. - Jesus said follow me
- Our first comments on this should not be to
apologetically soften it. - Nothing in our life can justify noncompliance.
- He is our commitment and our priority
19Demonstration of The Kings Power
- The Demands of Discipleship Mt 818-22
- 9) Lets not miss this What is the cost of
discipleship? - Mt 633 Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and
His righteousness - Mt 510-12 suffer persecution for righteousness
sake reproach for His name sake - Luke 1426ff
- Love everything else less than Christ
- Bare your own cross
- Count the cost
- Renounceth not all that he hath
