2 3Luke 41-4 (NKJV)
(1) Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy
Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by
the Spirit into the wilderness, (2) being tempted
for forty days by the devil. And in those days He
ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended,
He was hungry. (3) And the devil said to Him, If
You are the Son of God, command this stone to
become bread. (4) But Jesus answered him,
saying, It is written, Man shall not live by
bread alone, but by every word of God.
4Luke 45-8 (NKJV)
(5) Then the devil, taking Him up on a high
mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the
world in a moment of time. (6) And the devil said
to Him, All this authority I will give You, and
their glory for this has been delivered to me,
and I give it to whomever I wish. (7) Therefore,
if You will worship before me, all will be
Yours. (8) And Jesus answered and said to
him, Get behind Me, Satan! For it is
written, You shall worship the Lord your God,
and Him only you shall serve.
5Luke 49-11 (NKJV)
(9) Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on
the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, If
You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from
here. (10) For it is written He shall give His
angels charge over you, To keep you, (11) and,
In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you
dash your foot against a stone.
6Luke 412-13 (NKJV)
(12) And Jesus answered and said to him, It has
been said, You shall not tempt the Lord your
God. (13) Now when the devil had ended every
temptation, he departed from Him until an
opportune time.
7Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Here we are confronted with the mystery of the
humanity and divinity of Jesus. - Jesus is God He became flesh (John 11, 14).
- Made like us in all things (Heb. 217).
- Tempted like us in all things (Heb. 415).
- Fullness of Deity in bodily form (Col.29)
8Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Here we are confronted with the mystery of the
humanity and divinity of Jesus. - Yet God cant be tempted (Jas. 113)
- But of no less mystery is the death of the Son of
God. Can God die? - Jesus temptations were just as real as His
death.
9Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Jesus responds to each of the temptations of
Satan with a quotation from Scripture. - Knowledge of Gods Word is a powerful weapon in
our struggle against Satan. - To drive this point home, consider the source of
the passages that Jesus cites all from the book
of Deuteronomy.
10Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
(Deut. 83) You shall worship the Lord your God
and Him only shall you serve. (Deut. 613) You
shall not tempt the Lord your God. (Deut. 616)
11Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Jesus answered all three temptations from this
narrow selection of Scripture. Why? - TEXT of Moses sermon - The Ten Commandments
(57-21). THEME obedience to Gods law (61-3). - Moses makes a POINT God allowed the children of
Israel to suffer in the wilderness for the very
purpose of testing them and teaching them
regarding obedience. (Deut. 82-3)
12Deut. 82-3 (NKJV)
(2) And you shall remember that the Lord your God
led you all the way these forty years in the
wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know
what was in your heart, whether you would keep
His commandments or not. (3) So He humbled you,
allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna
which you did not know nor did your fathers know,
that He might make you know that man shall not
live by bread alone but man lives by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
13Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Is it any wonder, then, that Jesus would have
turned to just this sermon when He was being
tested in the wilderness? - Heb. 58 though He was a Son, yet He learned
obedience by the things which He suffered.
14Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Consider all of the parallels between Jesus and
Israels situation. - Israel was Gods son in the Old Testament
dispensation (Israel is My son, My firstborn
Ex. 422) - Israels testing in the wilderness foreshadowed
Jesus testing in the wilderness as the Son of
God.
15Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Consider all of the parallels between Jesus and
Israels situation. - Both tested in the wilderness
- Both were at the end of that period
- Israel was tested for 40 years Jesus was tested
for 40 days
16Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Consider all of the parallels between Jesus and
Israels situation. - Israel was being prepared through testing to
enter the land that God had prepared for them. - Jesus was being prepared through testing to enter
the work which God had prepared for Him.
17Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Consider all of the parallels between Jesus and
Israels situation. - Israel entered the wilderness after passing
through the waters of the Red Sea (baptized into
Moses in the cloud 1 Cor. 101) - Jesus entered the wilderness after being
baptized in the waters of the river Jordan.
Thou art My beloved Son.
18Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Consider all of the parallels between Jesus and
Israels situation. - Imagine the impact on Jesus as He considered
Deuteronomy 85 - Know then in your heart that as a man
disciplines his son, so the Lord your God
disciplines you.
19Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- It seems Jesus had anticipated this time of
testing and learning of obedience. - Luke 252 And Jesus increased in wisdom and
stature, and in favor with God and men. - Jesus had prepared His heart well, absorbing the
very words His Father had given to His earlier
son in the wilderness.
20Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- We should be able to anticipate testing as well,
for we ALSO are sons of God who are tested in
order to learn obedience in our journey through
the wilderness. - The example of Jesus shows us how to absorb
Gods Word into our very heart, and it also shows
us the power of such a prepared heart to resist
Satans temptations (Deut. 66-8).
21Deut. 66-9 (NKJV)
(6) And these words which I command you today
shall be in your heart. (7) You shall teach them
diligently to your children, and shall talk of
them when you sit in your house, when you walk by
the way, when you lie down, and when you rise
up. (8) You shall bind them as a sign on your
hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your
eyes. (9) You shall write them on the doorposts
of your house and on your gates.
22Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
23Luke 41-4 (NKJV)
(1) Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy
Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by
the Spirit into the wilderness, (2) being tempted
for forty days by the devil. And in those days He
ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended,
He was hungry. (3) And the devil said to Him, If
You are the Son of God, command this stone to
become bread. (4) But Jesus answered him,
saying, It is written, Man shall not live by
bread alone, but by every word of God.
24Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Turn the Stone to Bread
- Why is this such a serious temptation for Jesus?
Its not evil like murder, fornication, etc! - Satan wants Jesus to cheat on His mission,
which is to live and die as a human. If he
performs a little miracle here to escape His
sufferings, then why not later?
25Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Turn the Stone to Bread
- Jesus is the example of perfect obedience for
EVERY human, and thus qualifies to help us. - Heb. 217-18 415-16
26Hebrews 217-18 (NKJV)
(17) Therefore, in all things He had to be made
like His brethren, that He might be a merciful
and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to
God, to make propitiation for the sins of the
people. (18) For in that He Himself has
suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those
who are tempted.
27Hebrews 415-16 (NKJV)
(15) For we do not have a High Priest who cannot
sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in
all points tempted as we are, yet without
sin. (16) Let us therefore come boldly to the
throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and
find grace to help in time of need.
28Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Turn the Stone to Bread
- LESSON If Satan saw the weakness of the flesh of
our Lord, how much more should we beware of the
weakness of our flesh. - For example, out of hunger Esau sold his
birthright.
29Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
30Luke 45-8 (NKJV)
(5) Then the devil, taking Him up on a high
mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the
world in a moment of time. (6) And the devil said
to Him, All this authority I will give You, and
their glory for this has been delivered to me,
and I give it to whomever I wish. (7) Therefore,
if You will worship before me, all will be
Yours. (8) And Jesus answered and said to
him, Get behind Me, Satan! For it is
written, You shall worship the Lord your God,
and Him only you shall serve.
31Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Kingdoms of the World
- Why is this a temptation for Jesus? (boy doesnt
steal a bicycle if he knows his father is giving
him one next week) - Psalm 27-9 I will declare the decree The
Lord has said to Me, You are My Son, today I
have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give
You the nations for Your inheritance, and the
ends of the earth for Your possession.
32Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Kingdoms of the World
- An awful suffering, even death on the cross of
Calvary, lies between Jesus and those kingdoms
let this cup pass from Me! - A similar temptation three years later by Peter
(Matt. 1621-23), after Jesus revealed He would
go to Jerusalem to be crucified. - Get behind Me, Satan
33Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Kingdoms of the World
- LESSON This is a temptation we should recognize
the belief that we somehow can receive the
glory of the kingdom of Christ without sharing in
His sufferings. - There are no shortcuts.
34Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Kingdoms of the World
- Acts 1422 We must through many tribulations
enter the kingdom of God. - 1 Peter 121-22 For to this you were called,
because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us
an example, that you should follow His steps - 1 Timothy 312 All who live godly in Christ
Jesus shall be persecuted.
35Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
36Luke 49-12 (NKJV)
(9) Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on
the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, If
You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from
here. (10) For it is written He shall give His
angels charge over you, To keep you, (11) and,
In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you
dash your foot against a stone. (12) And Jesus
answered and said to him, It has been said, You
shall not tempt the Lord your God.
37Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Throw Yourself Down
- Satan misused Scripture (another lesson)
- Why is this a temptation for Jesus? Why would He
even want to jump? Not even any crowds below! - Observe the passage Jesus quoted in response
- Deut. 1616 - You shall not tempt the Lord
your God as you tempted Him in Massah.
38Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Throw Yourself Down
- In Exodus 1717 the tempting of God at Massah was
in Israels cry, Is the Lord among us, or not? - Israel wanted God to PROVE Himself to them they
wanted to walk by sight and not by faith. - Jesus, your road ahead is long and difficult. Is
your Father with you? If not, why start at all?
39Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Throw Yourself Down
- Honestly, would the Son of God really DOUBT that
His Father was with Him? - We might assume that Jesus had no need of faith.
After all, He KNEW! - 40 days ago My beloved Son
- And He would do miracles Himself!
40Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Throw Yourself Down
- Jesus faced death and knew He was going to be
raised from the dead on exactly the same basis
we do. He BELIEVED the promise of the Father. - He too had to walk by faith and not by sight
(whole point of Heb. 213-14).
41Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Throw Yourself Down
- He didnt doubt Is the Lord among us, or not?
- Psalm 912 I will say of the Lord, He is my
refuge and my fortress My God, in Him I will
trust.
42Luke 41-13The Temptations of Jesus
- Throw Yourself Down
- LESSON Like our Savior, the author and
perfecter (finisher) of faith (Heb. 123), we
must walk by faith and not by sight. Yes, the
Lord is among us.
43 44LUKE 4 Lessons
- Gods Word Jesus shows us how to absorb it into
our very heart so that we may endure our testing
in the wilderness. - Weakness of the Flesh If Satan saw it in our
Lord, how much more should we beware of the
weakness of our flesh. - No Shortcuts There are no shortcuts to the
glory of the kingdom of Christ. - Walk by Faith Like Jesus, we must go to our
death believing the Lord is among us.
