Data Center
  • A data center refers to any physical space (a
    building, a group of buildings, a buildings
    dedicated space etc.) that is used to house an
    organizations IT infrastructure, critical
    applications and data. It has a network of
    computing and storage resources which are used to
    deliver shared applications and data. Storage
    systems, servers, firewalls, routers,
    application-delivery controllers are an essential
    part of any data center.
  • Data centers serve the purpose of securing
    resources that have to do with information
    technology along with ensuring the least amount
    of downtime.

  • Network Infrastructure- It is meant to connect

  • Computing Resources- These resources (servers)
    enable processing of applications.

Tiers of Data Centers
  • The four tiers of data centers are mentioned
    below-
  • Tier 1 It is usually used by small-sized
    businesses. There are no assured built-in
    redundancies in it for the purpose of ensuring
    optimal uptime. A tier 1 data centers average
    downtime in a year is 28.8 hours.
  • Tier 2 Certain redundancies are introduced in it
    by the colocation provider. Moreover, partial
    redundancies are usually built in for the purpose
    of ensuring the availability of power and cooling
    for supporting operations. Its annual downtime is
    approximately 22 hours.
  • Tier 3 It provides better protection against
    issues that have to do with power and cooling. A
    tier 3 data centers annual downtime is 1.6
    hours. Such a data center makes use of N1 fault
    tolerenace. This ensures up to 72 hours of
    protection against a power outage.
  • Tier 4 An annual uptime of 99.995 is provided
    by a tier 4 data center. Its annual downtime is
    as low as 26.3 minutes which makes it a top
    choice for enterprises. A tier 4 data center has
    2n1 redundant infrastructure and it assures 96
    hours of protection against a power outage.

Types of Data Centers
  • The classification of data centers depends on
    certain factors, such as, the number of owner
    organizations, computing and storage technologies
    that have been used, the way these data centers
    fit into the topology of other data centers,
    their energy efficiency etc.

    below, in no particular order.

  • Managed Services Data Centers
  • Colocation Data Centers

Different types of Data Centers Explained
  • The above-mentioned types of data centers are
    explained below, in brief.
  • Enterprise Data Centers- These data centers are
    owned, built and operated by enterprises and are
    usually housed on a corporate campus. These are
    optimized for the end users.
  • Managed Services Data Centers- This type of a
    data center is managed by a third party. The
    business that uses it leases the required
    infrastructure rather than buying it.
  • Colocation Data Centers- In this type of a data
    center, a business rents space in a data center
    that is not owned by it and which is located off
    the business premises. Such a data center hosts
    the infrastructure whereas the business provides
    and manages all the components which include
    servers, firewalls etc.
  • Cloud Data Centers- In this type of a data
    center, the applications and data are hosted by a
    particular cloud services provider. It is an
    off-premise data center.
