• Objectives HTAWS
• Quantify the ability of the HTAWS to reduce
  incidents of Controlled Flight into Terrain
  (CFIT)
• Develop a test plan for the evaluation of the use
  of helicopter TAWS in day VFR operations
• Acquire access to TAWS-equipped helicopters
• Collect data from flight evaluation of the TAWS
  in various operational conditions
• Analyze the operational use of HTAWS for EMS ops
• Make preliminary recommendations for applications
  and training of HTAWS for EMS operators

• Gather data to identify obstructions using EVS,
  during all phases of flight
• Quantify an individuals ability to identify the
  same objects and/or terrain with the unaided eye
• Analyze the operational use of EVS Systems for
  EMS operations
• Make preliminary recommendations for applications
  and training of EVS for EMS operators

• EMS ops increased from 162,000 hrs in 1991 to
  300,000 hrs in 2005 (NTSB)
• Accident Rate (helo and fixed wing)
• 1992-2001 3.53 per 100k
• 1997-2001 4.56 per 100k
• Jan 02 to Jan 05 55 EMS accidents, 41 helo

• Problem
• In 2004
• All HEMS fatal accidents in VFR only aircraft, at
  night
• No aircraft were equipped with TAWS/EVS
• Five of the six fatal accidents have CFIT
  characteristics (FAA)

• Test Plan
• Lots of confusion at first
• No familiarity with writing a test plan
• Honeywell came to our rescue
• Provided us with a HTAWS test plan
• Used it as a template for TAWS EVS
• Used as a basis for developing in-flight test
  cards
