Title: Regarding Changes to IEEE Fellow Nominations Categories, Process
1Regarding Changes to IEEE Fellow Nominations
-Categories, Process Material
REMINDER
2Goals of the Changes
- Assure equal opportunity for recognition
- across the entire spectrum of Engineering
- disciplines from research to application
- related fields
- Stimulate more nominations of highly
- qualified Application Engineers and
- Practitioners, as this group has historically
- been under represented
3Fellow nomination process changes implemented
- IEEE Bylaw I-104.2.
- Fellow Nomination categories
- (Added Application Engineer/Practitioner)
-
- Nomination forms and instructions
- available
on the WEB - Capability to submit electronic nominations
- BOD assigns Ad Hoc committee to assist the Fellow
- Committee in publicizing the changes made -
with - emphasis on the Application Engineer/
Practitioner - category
4Outcome of Bylaw I-104.2 Change
- Clarified the eligibility of application
engineers / practitioners - Reinforced that accomplishments should bring the
realization of significant value to society. - To view specific changes made to Bylaw I-104.2,
please refer to next slide
5Changes to IEEE Bylaw I-104.2 (changes
underlined)
- The grade of Fellow recognizes unusual
distinction in the profession and shall be
conferred only by invitation of the Board of
Directors upon a person with an extraordinary
record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE
fields of interest. The accomplishments that are
being honored shall have contributed importantly
to the advancement or application of engineering,
science, and technology, bringing the realization
of significant value to society.
6The IEEE Constitution says
- Its purposes are.directed toward the
- theory AND PRACTICE OF Electrical
- Engineeringand the IEEE shall strive to
- enhance the quality of life of all people
throughout - the World through the CONSTRUCTIVE
- APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY..
7IEEE Fellow Nomination Categories
- Categories effective 2005 Fellow Class based
on 2003 BoD decisions - Research Engineer/Scientist
- Application Engineer/Practitioner
- Technical Leader
- Educator
- Category was formerly Engineer/Scientist
- New category was established to clarify
the eligibility of application
engineers

- End of suggested basic slide
- presentation. The following slides
- might be useful and interesting
- to the audience
11THE IEEE FELLOW PROCESS
- Individual Contributions/Evidence of Technical
Accomplishment - Description of disciplines within the engineering
profession - Application Engineer/Practitioner - What product
development, advancement in system, application
or operation, project management or construction
activity, process development, manufacturing
innovation, codes or standards development, or
other application of technology was the direct
result of the candidates personal effort? List
the most important tangible and verifiable
evidence of the candidates contribution and, if
pertinent to any of the above, significant
technical publications, technical reports and/or
presentations, magazine articles, internal
reports, testimonials or patents. Where a team
effort was involved, identify and document the
specific technical contribution of the candidate. -

-
12THE IEEE FELLOW PROCESS
- . Individual Contributions/Evidence of Technical
Accomplishment - Description of disciplines within the engineering
profession - Research Engineer/Scientist - What inventions,
discoveries or advances in the state of the art
did the candidate make? Indicate innovation,
creativity, and importance of the candidates
research. List patents, papers published in
refereed journals, and other tangible and
verifiable evidence of the candidates
accomplishments. Where a team effort was
involved, identify and document the specific or
technical contribution of the candidate.
Describe the expected significant value to
society of the candidates contributions. -
-
-
13THE IEEE FELLOW PROCESS
- Individual Contributions/Evidence of Technical
Accomplishment - Description of disciplines within the engineering
profession - Educator -What impact has the candidate had on
education in science or electrical engineering?
For example What new curricula and/or courses
has the candidate developed? In what way are
they innovative and unique? Has the candidate
written a pioneering text in his/her field? What
has been the range of acceptance of this text
regional or worldwide? Has the text improved the
understanding of the particular field? What
contributions has the candidate made in
engineering education as an administrator? What
has been the success of these efforts, and how
and to what extent have they changed engineering
education? -
-
-
14THE IEEE FELLOW PROCESS
- Individual Contributions/Evidence of Technical
Accomplishment - Description of disciplines within the engineering
profession - Technical Leader - What outstanding engineering
application or scientific accomplishment resulted
from a managerial, team, or company-wide effort
that was lead by this candidate? Explain its
importance. Consider it from the point of view
of benefit to society, technical innovation, risk
involved, outstanding performance, achieving
economic acceptability, or other advantages.
What did this individual do that made the
achievement possible? The candidates
organizational position, while important, cannot
be used as the sole evidence of achievement or
technical contribution. -
