1. Antiquity (1000 BC 500 AD)
The Celtic civilization, which originates in the
Danube region, spreads in Europe in the course of
the first millennium BC. The city of Marseille
however is founded by the Greeks around 600 BC.
Dozens of Celtic tribes settle in Gaul from the
5th century BC. In 121, southern Gaul is
conquered by Rome.

The Gauls are an agrarian people who grow various
crops, including wheat. They master various
metals, such as bronze and iron, with which they
make tools for agriculture but also weapons to
wage battles. They are fierce fighters, they do
frequent incursions into Roman territory.

In addition to the southern territory conquered
in 121 BC, Gaul is now divided into three parts.
Lyon becomes the capital of the Three Gauls.
The Pax Romana will bring a certain stability
and prosperity to Gaul and its inhabitants, now
known as the Gallo-Romans. With economic and
cultural development, a sense of cohesiveness and
identity emerge.
