Program Goal
  • Improve healthcare worker safety in the
    healthcare environment through appropriate and
correct use of P2 and N95 masks

3
Aims and Objectives
  • To ensure healthcare workers are aware of the
indications for use of a P2 or N95 mask and the
rationale behind ensuring a fit check is
performed each time a P2 or N95 mask is fitted
  • Ensure healthcare workers are aware of the
correct sequence for donning a P2 or N95 mask
  • Ensure healthcare workers are aware of the steps
required to perform a fit check on a P2 or N95
    mask

4
Principles of Fit Checking
  • How to don and fit check P2 or N95 masks

5
What is a P2 or N95 Mask?
  • A P2 or N95 mask offers protection from diseases
    spread by airborne transmission
  • A P2 or N95 mask is indicated for infections
requiring additional airborne precautions such as
    Tuberculosis (pulmonary)
  • Brands of P2 or N95 masks vary slightly. It is
important to always understand the type of P2 or
N95 mask used by your facility and refer to the
    manufacturers instructions

Donning a P2 or N95 mask
Nosepiece
Step 1
Ensure you the right side of the mask facing up.
The nosepiece should be at top of mask. Separate
the edges of the mask to fully open it.
8
Nosepiece (top of mask)

Step 2
Slightly bend the nose wire to form a gentle curve
9
Nosepiece (top of mask)

Step 3
Hold the mask upside down to expose the two
headbands
10

Step 4
Using your index fingers and thumbs, separate the
two headbands
11

Step 5

While holding the headbands cup the mask under
your chin
12

Step 6

Pull the headbands up and over your head
13

Step 7
Place and position the lower headband at the base
of your neck (under your ears)
14

Step 8

Place the upper headband on the crown of your
head. The band should run just above the top of
your ears
15

Step 9

Gently conform/press the nosepiece across the
bridge of your nose by pressing down with fingers
until it fits snug
16
Step 10
Continue to adjust the mask and edges until you
feel you have achieved a good and comfortable
facial fit
17
THE FIT CHECK
  • A fit check must be performed each time a P2 or
    N95 mask is worn

18
What is a FIT CHECK?
  • The principle of a fit check is to ensure the
mask is checked for secure fit each time it is
applied to the wearers face thereby reducing the
risks of the wearer being exposed to any airborne
    contaminants including micro-organisms.

Fit checks ensure the mask is sealed over the
bridge of the nose and mouth and that there are
no gaps between the mask and face
19
Step 11
Gently inhale. When you breathe in the mask
should draw in slightly toward the face and
collapse
20
Step 12
Gently exhale. The mask should fill up with air.
It is important at this stage that there is no
air leakage around the edges of the mask
21
Observe for air leakage around edges of mask
If you have not achieved a successful fit check
as instructed it is important that you seek
advice or have someone assist you with fitting
and checking your mask, as an incorrectly fitted
mask will not provide you with the intended level
of protection from airborne infectious diseases
