4The dictionary has several definitions for the
word pattern. As it applies to math, the word
pattern means a set of characteristics that are
repeated. Patterns can be found all around us
naturally and man-made. Flowers and snowflakes
are made up of patterns. Bricks on a building
or roofing shingles are good examples of man-made
patterns as well as fabric woven in stripes or
plaid.
