THE BASE

• The base of a power wheelchair is the lower
  portion that batteries, motors, drive wheel,
  electronic and casters. The seat is attached to
  the base. Bases are classified according to drive
  wheel location relative to center of gravity.

  user puffs air or sips into a tube and takes a
  little practice to get used to.

POWER-ASSISTED WHEELCHAIRS

• Power-assisted wheelchairs are Manual Wheelchairs
  motors that provide extra propulsion as needed,
  such as on steep ramps. These are less bulky and
  easier to transport, but have less power
  functionality.

SEATING AND POSITIONING

• Seating and positioning are designed to meet
  comfort, health and personal needs. There are
  three general seating system modular, off
  -the-shelf, and custom seating in usually needed
  only after surgery for a pressure sore or when
  there are musculoskeletal deformities present.

durable, and usually less expensive BRUSHLESS
ELECTRIC MOTOR Also called an electronically
commutated motor, these are quieter, more
reliable, longer lasting and offer more torque
per watt and weight. LIGHT LITHIUM ION BATTERY
Lithium ion batteries can go up to 15 miles
before recharging, offering better range and
speed. They also weight less and travel more
easily on airplanes REMOVABLE SEAT AND SEAT
COVER Removable seats made from soft, durable
materials like convoluted foam, gel foam, or
memory foam add stability and comfort . Removable
seat covers protect the foam and allow you to
wash them as much as you want to. Covers can also
be waterproof and can allow you to express your
personal style.

TURNING RADIUS A tighter turning radius is
better for indoor uses and urban settings. WHEELS
Foam-filled tires are durable, puncture proof,
and require little maintenance . Air-filled tires
are often better for outdoor use over more rugged
ground. INDOOR VS OUTDOOR USE Mid-wheel drive or
center-wheelchairs have a tighter turning radius,
are usually stable enough to handle all types of
terrain these are good for indoor or outdoor use.
Rear-wheel wheelchairs offer higher speeds and
lots of stability, but a relatively poor turning
radius, making these better for outdoor
use. MEDICAL COVERAGE Most electric wheelchairs
are covered by Medicare part B. Your health care
provider must verify your need for the equipment.
You may pay up to 20 percent of the cost even if
it is covered. BATTERY LIFE Many power
wheelchairs can travel up to 14 or more miles on
a charger and some travel 19 to 20 miles. Other
have much shorter battery life. you must also
consider charging time
