How To Choose
A CHAIR INSTITUTE GUIDE
If you suddenly find yourself in need of a
wheelchair to help you or a member of your family
cope with a mobility issue, the search to find
the "right" one can be daunting indeed. This
handy infographic was designed to help simplify
your search.
2Take Careful Measurements
- Right-sizing your wheelchair i critical for your
long-term comfort in it. - There are three key measurements to consider
- have the person the wheelchair is for sit on a
straight backed wooden chair to take the first
two measurements. - Seat Depth Measure from the back of the user's
bottom to the back of the knee. Record this
value, in inches. - Seat Width Measure from outer hip to outer hip,
in inches and add 2" to the total. -
3- Note The reason for adding 2" to the seat width
is because you'll want to accommodate the
presence of bulkier winter clothing. If you don't
live in an area that gets cold in the wintertime,
you can get away with only adding 1" to the
measurement. - Seat to floor Height-
- If You Are (14" to 16) (17" to 18)
(19to21)Optimal Seat To Floor Height (Under
5" Tall) (5to 6 Tall) (Taller then 6) -
4Deciding The Right Type Of Wheelchair For You
- Broadly speaking, wheelchairs fall into one of
three categories - Transport Chairs
- Pros Lightweight, easy to travel with. Great for
shopping, trips to the mall and short stints
outside as long as you stick to paved areas. - Cons Not comfortable for longer periods of
sitting (2hours), and not suitable for uneven
terrain. No padding to speak of, no ergonomic
support to speak of.
5Manual Wheelchairs
- Pros Highly accessible and available,
reasonably priced, available in a variety of
configurations. You can find manual wheelchairs
suitable for all terrain, the beach, mixed, or
exclusively indoor use. - Cons You're limited by your personal stamina
and/or the availability of an assistant who can
give you a push if you get tired.
6Electric Wheelchairs
- Pros Available in a stunning array of
configurations. You can find electric wheelchair
for any use you can imagine, from indoor or mixed
indoor outdoor use, to chairs that can handle the
toughest, most rugged terrain you can throw at
them. Maximizes your freedom and independence
because you don't need to wait on an assistant to
help get you where you want to go. - Cons Significantly more expensive than their
manual cousins.

- This is something you'll probably want to wait
for a while to do. We recommend using your chair
is and get a feel for its capabilities, then
begin exploring the world of accessories when you
start running into the limitations of whatever
model you've selected for yourself. - In terms of customization options, there are all
sort of possibilities, including, but not limited
to - Replacement tries, including custom tries that
will optimize your chair for other types of
terrain (beach, wilderness, mixed-use)
8- Extra padding, cushioning and/or lumbar support
- Cup Holders
- Oxygen Tank Holders
- Umbrella Holders
- Anti-Tippers(many, but not all wheelchairs come
- with these as standard features)
- Brake Extensions
- And more!
9- You should begin your search for accessories by
visiting the website of whatever company you
purchased your chair from, as you can be assured

own. -
