Individual vs. Team
  • An individual event is one that is completed by
    the individual.
  • A team event is one that is completed by team
    members
  • with the exception of Chapter Service Project and
    Chapter Showcase, which reflect the efforts of
    other chapter members
  • may have one, two, or three participants
  • Parliamentary Procedure may have four to eight

Event Categories
  • Junior - chapter members through grade 9
  • Senior - chapter members in grades 1012 who are
    identified as comprehensive members on the
    national affiliation form
  • Occupational - chapter members in grades 1012
    who have been or are currently enrolled in
    occupational Family and Consumer Sciences
    coursework and who are identified as
    occupational on the national affiliation form.

Junior vs. Senior
  • Junior Only Event
  • Recycle and Redesign
  • Junior members can participate at the senior
    level, but senior members cannot participate at
    the junior level
  • A team composed of both junior and senior members
    must enter the senior category.

  • Occupational Only Events
  • Culinary Arts
  • Early Childhood
  • Hospitality
  • CANNOT participate in
  • Career Investigation
  • Recycle and Redesign

Chapter Projects
  • No project can be entered in more than one
    category of a single event, or in more than one
    event.
  • However, projects entered in any event may be
    included in the Chapter Showcase events.

Chapter Service Projects
  • Chapters may choose to enter both a Chapter
    Service Project Display and Manual, but must
    select different service projects for each.
  • Therefore, you could have up to four entries for
    Chapter Service Project but ALL MUST be different
    projects.

Costumes/Uniforms
  • Clothing of a distinctive design or fashion worn
    by members of a particular group and serving as a
    means of identification.
  • If the event allows costumes/uniforms, DO IT!
  • Events that do NOT allow costumes/uniforms
  • Fashion Design
  • Financial Planning
  • Interior Design
  • Job Interview
  • Recycle Redesign

Project Identification Page
  • A page at the front of a document or display
    containing headings specifically called for by
    event rules.
  • 8 1/2" x 11" plain paper with no graphics or
    decorations
  • may be any color
  • use FCCLA national region (CENTRAL)
  • project title is not the event title
  • can be portrait or landscape
  • use the entire page dont cram it into a small
    space
  • judges appreciate information in the order on the
    event specifications sheet

Planning Process
  • A five-step method to help FCCLA chapter members
    and advisers plan individual, group, or chapter
    activities.

File Folders
  • A letter-size folder 8 1/2" x 11" with one fold
    on lower horizontal edge and open on the other 3
    sides may have a tab at the top or may be
    straight cut. Within the file folder, each set of
    materials should be stapled separately.

Displays
  • An arrangement of material that includes but is
    not limited to photos, project samples, etc., and
    is contained within a specified area that
    includes all materials, visuals, and audiovisual
    equipment to be used for the presentation.

Display Dimensions
  • Freestanding 48 x 60 x 72
  • Tabletop 30 x 48 x 48
  • If you have a prop or visual aid within your
    display, you may NOT take it outside of the
    dimensions of your display. (i.e., handout,
    sample, etc.)
  • If you put anything under your table or use a
    tablecloth, it is considered part of your display
    dimensions

Display Materials
  • Display
  • wood, cardboard, show boards, pvc pipes, foam
    board, RV bathtub, Styrofoam, etc.
  • Coverings
  • paint, fabric, shower curtains, felt,
    tablecloths, plastic sheeting, etc.
  • Embellishments
  • bulletin board sets, borders, fabric, cardstock,
    letters, any items that reflects your theme
  • laminate items
  • Consider the weight, transportability, ease of
    set up, and possible shipping costs

Manuals
  • An arrangement of materials in an FCCLA scrapbook
    containing pictures, news clippings, and program
    booklets.
  • You MUST use the official FCCLA scrapbook!
  • use captions under your pictures
  • take care not to stack/overlap
  • include a page with purposes or include them
    throughout the book
  • know what areas you are going to need in your
    scrapbook so you can document it properly

Portfolios
  • A record/collection of a persons work organized
    in a format that best suits the project and meets
    the requirements of the event.
  • You MUST use the official STAR event
    binder/notebook (white or red)!
  • tabs have to fit within your binder/notebook
  • use plastic sheet protectors to prevent tearing
    or smudging
  • Cover page does NOT have to be like your project
    identification page
  • Read your specification sheet over and over!

Content Pages vs. Divider Pages
  • Content pages
  • pages of a manual, business plan, or portfolio
    that contain information about the project
  • one side of page only with no stacking/overlapping
  • Divider pages
  • pages of a manual or portfolio that separate
    sections
  • do not contain content
  • may include graphic elements, titles, logos,
    theme decorations, page numbers, and/or a table
    of contents for a section

Oral Presentations
  • Range from 20-75 points depending on the event
  • Focus as much attention on the presentation as
    you do for the display, manual, portfolio, etc.
  • To help organize the presentation, use the
    criteria from the rubric as a reference for the
    order of your presentation

  • New STAR Events rubrics are more specific
  • Fashion Design 4 - 5 minutes
  • Financial Planning 5 - 10 minutes
  • Recycle Redesign 4 - 5 minutes
  • Interior Design 14 - 15 minutes

Interior Design Presentation
  • Use of 15 minutes to cover essential points
  • 1 Dialogue lagged after 3-4 minutes
  • 2 Dialogue lagged after 5-8 minutes
  • 3 Stopped at 15 minutes, unfinished
  • 4 Covered essentials in 14-15 minutes

Props vs. Visuals
  • Prop (e.g., book, puppet, pointer, etc.)
  • object used to enhance a theme or presentation
  • does not include visuals, audiovisuals, or
    costumes/uniforms.
  • Live objects are not allowed.
  • Visuals
  • posters, charts, slides, transparencies,
    presentation software, etc.
  • The ONLY event that doesnt allow both props and
    visuals is Financial Planning!

Tips for Advisers
  • Have students choose an event that interests them
  • Review the guidelines very carefully
  • Meet state and national deadlines
  • Celebrate their accomplishments
