What are they? CNs are an extended, long form
(i.e, slender tubes), of the now famous C60
fullerene buckyball essentially CNs are
single molecules comprised of rolled graphite
sheets capped at each end

- What are some useful properties?
- CNs have extraordinary resilience and strength
- and other unusual properties gt
- they can abruptly and reversibly snap from
one shape to another under load - they can be formed into very strong ropes
- they exhibit electrical conductivity in a
quantizedfashion that has led to research on
- tiny nanowires and nanoscale transistors

CN Synthesis Method 1- laser vaporization of a
carbon target in a furnace _at_ 1200 0C A
cobalt -nickel catalyst facilitates growth of
CN (helps prevent premature capping of the
ends) during synthesis two pulsed lasers
(fired 50 ns apart) can help maintain CN growth
conditions over a larger volume and longer time
