Constructivism
  • Rooted in sociology, IR as social process
  • States as social actors
  • Actions follow international or domestic rules
  • State behavior driven by rules, norms, culture,
    institutions, and identities
  • Identities and interests of states not simply
    structurally determined
  • Produced by interactions, institutions, norms,
    cultures
  • Process, not structure, determines how states
    interact
  • How different from realism?
  • Social process
  • Power doesnt explain many relationships
  • Reputation
  • See Alexander Wendt, 'Anarchy is What States Make
of It', International Organisation, 46/2, 1992.

Constructivism and Appropriateness
  • Logic of consequences vs. logic of
    appropriateness
  • Based on norms, beliefs about what is right and
what is wrong, appropriate (cartoon of the
    Prophet)
  • Evidence nations behave not to fulfill
interests, but to be consistent with what is
  • Sense of right and wrong can come from identity
    or from shifting human norms
  • Examples?
