High School Facts / Issues

• GPA- stands for Grade Point Average. This number
  determines class rank and is an issue in college
  admissions and scholarships. GPA is a 4 point
  scale and is based on a students grade in a
  class. Advanced courses carry a higher weight
  because they are more difficult. (Example
• A in standard course, 4 points A in advanced
  course, 4.5 points.)

Class Ranking

• The Grade Point Average (GPA) will be used when
  determining student class rankings. If there is
  a tie using the GPA, then and only then will the
  numerical average (carried out to the appropriate
  number of decimal places) be used in order to
  break the tie.

High School Facts / Issues

• Transcript this is a record of a students high
  school academic career. It includes each course
  taken and the grade earned in that course. This
  starts in the 9th grade and continues through
  graduation. This is the document sent to
  colleges, scholarship organizations, employers,
  etc., to verify a students high school record.

Graduation Requirements for the Alabama High
School Diploma

• 1) A student must earn 24 Carnegie units
  (credits).
• 2) A student must pass all five portions of the
  Alabama High School Graduation Exam.

Credits

• Students must earn 24 credits before graduation.
  Each full year course counts for one credit.
  Each semester course counts for ½ credit.
  Students must pass the course in order to receive
  the credit. Students who are on the East campus
  all day may earn 7 credits per year. Students
  who attend the Career/Technical Center (available
  in grades 10-12) may earn 6 credits per year.

Promotion requirements for High School

• 1) As a 9th grader, a student must have passed
  all 8th grade requirements.
• 2) As a 10th grader, a student must have passed
  five units of 9th grade including the four core
  subjects and one additional course.
• 3) As an 11th grader, a student must have passed
  11 units up through 10th grade including 2
  credits in each of the four core subjects and 3
  additional courses.
• 4) As a 12th grader, a student must have passed
  17 units (18 if a tech school student) up through
  11th grade including 3 credits in each of the
  four core subjects and must be a candidate for
  graduation with a total of 24 Carnegie Units.
  All core subjects must be passed in sequence.

Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE)

• The Alabama State Board of Education requires
  that any student receiving an Alabama High School
  Diploma must pass all five subject tests of the
  AHSGE.
• Reading Science
• Language Social Studies
• Mathematics
• Any student who fails one or more parts of the
  AHSGE is required to complete the appropriate
  skills lab remediation course(s).

When tests are given

• Students who successfully complete Algebra I and
  or Biology before the spring of their 10th grade
  year will have an early opportunity to take the
  mathematics and or science subject tests) at the
  next scheduled administration.
• Students will take the AHSGE exam in the spring
  of the 10th grade as a checkpoint leading to the
  AHSGE.
• Students following the normal rate of progression
  in Grades 9-12 are provided four opportunities to
  take the AHSGE.
• Spring administration in 11th grade
• Fall of 12th grade
• Midyear 12th grade
• Spring of 12th grade
• They have the option to take the AHSGE during the
  summer
• between their 11th and 12th grades

  by the State Board of Education. (May, 2008)

• Diploma Option 2 The Alabama Occupational
  Diploma
• The Alabama Occupational Diploma (AOD) may be
  acquired through the general education curriculum
  or an alternative that is aligned with the
  Alabama courses of study. The recipients of this
  diploma are students with some form of learning
  disability. Those who receive the AOD must take
  the AHSGE but are not required to pass. The AOD
  is recognized by non-degreed certification
  programs and some community colleges.

Students with disabilities who graduate with the
AOD or Certificate of Attendance may continue to
work toward the Alabama High School Diploma to

Advanced Career Technical Endorsement

• Requires passing the same coursework as the
  Advanced Academic Endorsement with the exception
  of foreign language and passing three career and
  technical courses (or two career and technical
  courses and another course related to the
  students career choice). In addition, 5/5
  sections of the AHSGE also must be passed.

Career Technical Endorsement Requirements

• Must meet diploma requirements
• Pass three career and technical courses
• Pass 5/5 sections of the AHSGE

The Career Technical Center is available ½ day
for students in grades 10-12. Students must
pre-register in order to attend the CTC. Only 9
credits can be earned at the CTC which includes
any credits earned in history or skills lab.All
students attending the CTC will take the
appropriate grade level history course there.

Credit-Based Endorsement

• Following the spring administration of the
  Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE),
  twelfth grade students who have not passed all
  sections of the AHSGE may choose the Credit-Based
  Endorsement of the Alabama High School Diploma if
  they have met the following criteria
• Successfully met the academic course requirements
  as established by the local school system.
• Successfully met the course requirements for one
  career and technical education course.
• Passed the reading, mathematics and one other
  subtest of the AHSGE.

Four Year Plan

• Each 8th grader must complete a 4-year plan.
  This document will project possible courses for
  the student to take during his or her high school
  career. This plan should reflect courses
  designed to prepare a student for his or her
  college/career goal. Some courses are required,
  based on the diploma endorsement chosen. Some
  courses are electives meaning students my
  choose which ones to take. These plans will be
  adjusted as students interests change.

Final Thoughts

• Pre-registration forms and 4-year plans should be
  turned in to Mrs. Schrimsher by Friday, January
  15.
