5Petition Process
- District Policy JCA does allow families that have
students with special circumstances to appeal to
the Board of Trustees for an exception to their
school assignment. Upon review of the request,
the Board will make the determination whether
circumstances warrant an exemption. Parents
wishing to exercise this option must submit their
request in writing citing their students special
circumstances to Board Chairman Bo Blanton,
Dorchester School District Two Administrative
Offices, 102 Green Wave Blvd., Summerville, SC
29483. Letters must be received on or before
February 29, 2008.

13Carnegie Units
- A student who exceeds 10 absences in any one year
long course is not eligible to receive credit for
that course. - Students may be denied credit if the attendance
days are not met, regardless of excused or
unexcused. - By successfully passing a course and meeting the
attendance days, a student can earn a Carnegie
unit. - 24 Carnegie units are required for graduation.
- 8th graders must bring all earned Carnegie units
to high school.
14Uniform Grading Policy
- Students will transfer high school credits earned
in middle school. - Students may only retake a middle school Carnegie
unit in 9th grade and, no matter what grade was
earned in middle school, the Freshmen grade will
appear on the transcript whether it is higher or
lower. - Retaking courses is recommended if a student does
not make a B or better in Middle School. - Carnegie units earned in middle school are
computed in the GPA and reflect on the High
School Transcript.

will have an IEP meeting before the end of the

- Students will complete course selection sheets
- IEP meetings will be held to confirm and ensure
correct course selection - A second copy of the course selection will be

30Recommendations
- Teachers will be making recommendations for core
courses that the students will be taking. - The recommendations will be made on a
pre-registration form. - If parents agree with the recommendations, they
are to sign the form and return it to school. - If you do not agree with the recommendations, you
should contact your childs counselor at the
middle school to set up a conference to discuss
the override. - Overrides A parent has the right to override a
teacher recommendation for a course. If the
parent chooses to use this right, the student
will remain in the override class regardless of
the grade.
