What are CETLs?
  • Centres for Excellence in Teaching Learning
  • HEFCE's largest single funding initiative in
    teaching and learning, launched 2004
  • 259 bids from 126 HEIs
  • 74 successful CETLs announced Jan 2005
  • Brighton CETLs
  • CETL in Design (with VA, RCA, RIBA)
  • CETL in Creativity (with Sussex)
  • LearnHigher (with 15 other universities)

  • Joint initiative between the Universities of
    Sussex and Brighton http//www.sussex.ac.uk/cetl
    /
  • Based in engineering and design Brighton end
    led by Richard Morris (Product Design CL, School
    of Engineering)
  • Also supports projects across other disciplines
    through the Creativity Development Fund
  • Two technology-rich Creativity Zones open autumn

Visual Practices?
  • Vital aspect of most academic disciplines, - but
    neglected in traditional study skills support
  • Aim to improve understanding of visual learning
    and identify/evaluate/develop supporting
    resources in three key areas
  • observation and recording of visual evidence - in
    classroom, field trips, laboratory or clinical
    settingsĀ 
  • evaluation and analysis of visual information
    (natural phenomena, artefacts or human subjects)
  • effective use of visual communication and argument

  • Learning development mainly embedded in courses
    effective but now facing demands for additional
    central support (outside remit of Disability
    Team)
  • Sharing LearnHigher resources to develop new
    online study advice on studentcentral
  • Working towards enhanced central services for
    2007-8
  • Visual Practices resources for the sector
  • No recurrent funding for local projects - but
    Brighton received 89k capital for LH in Jan
    2006
  • Contribution to Student Centre at Eastbourne
    information point at UCH
  • Equipment to support local projects (outcomes
    will help build evidence base for understanding
    visual learning)
