  • Explorers are looking for a western route to Asia
  • Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who
    sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492.
    He came to the Caribbean islands.
  • News of the new land quickly spread throughout
    Europe, gaining the interest of many others.

Henry Hudson
  • His voyage on the Half Moon led him into New
    York Bay and up the Hudson River.
  • He goes back to the Netherlands and tells all
    about the new land and its people. He also tells
    how eager these new people were to trade their
    furs for European goods!

  • New Amsterdam (Manhattan) was the second
    permanent settlement.

  • Colonists from both Fort Orange and New Amsterdam
    are trading and trapping for furs.
  • Boats from Fort Orange would bring goods to New
    Amsterdam.
  • Boats from the Netherlands would pick up goods
    here and bring them back to Europe.
  • This was a continuous cycle.
