Problem Definition

• DIDO was created in 1996 with limited search
  capabilities and low-resolution (72 dpi) images
  as a quick way for faculty to access art images
  over the Web
• Current DIDO does not support
• Robust browsing and searching of the collection
  or across external resources (licensed and/or
  personal collections)
• Access to multiple image resolutions including
  high resolution images
• Presentation-building interface where faculty can
  arrange, juxtapose, magnify, annotate, download
  and so on images and metadata for class lectures.

Where to From Here?

• The Digital Library Program and the Fine Arts
  Slide Library will convene an official project
  team to discuss findings and individual progress
  thus far
• Cataloging standards need to be established
  before an interface to the collection can be
  implemented
• Further contextual inquiry sessions will be
  scheduled with Fine Arts, other Humanities
  faculty and image managers from such
  departments as the IDS to gather data from a
  broader user group (art versus documentary
  images)
• Human Subjects Committee approved future studies

• In-depth assessment, based on recommendations
  presented, of the three implementation
  alternatives is necessary homegrown, licensed
  vendor, and open-source technology.
