Problem Definition
  • DIDO was created in 1996 with limited search
capabilities and low-resolution (72 dpi) images
as a quick way for faculty to access art images
    over the Web
  • Current DIDO does not support
  • Robust browsing and searching of the collection
or across external resources (licensed and/or
    personal collections)
  • Access to multiple image resolutions including
    high resolution images
  • Presentation-building interface where faculty can
    arrange, juxtapose, magnify, annotate, download
and so on images and metadata for class lectures.

3
Todays DIDO
  • DIDO search page
  • Default Boolean or
  • Can lead to many irrelevant results
  • A search for van gogh illustrates this well
  • Default image size
  • Ideal for simple online presentations
  • Not so well suited for other purposes
  • Save your selection feature
  • Still requires users to click and save each image

4
Data Collection/Usability
  • Contextual Inquiry sessions
  • Four faculty members from Fine Arts
  • Consisted of interviews, retrospective
    walkthroughs, and background questionnaire

5
Data Collection/Usability
  • Usability Testing
  • Three participants
  • Consisted of one-on-one walkthrough and
    self-guided heuristic evaluations
  • Prototype

6
Data Collection/Usability
  • Key Recommendations
  • Browse function
  • More robust keyword search
  • Advanced search
  • Portfolio, or save, page

7
Tomorrows DIDO aka DIDO2
  • In General
  • DIDO2 will provide a clearer labeling of
interface widgets and/or provide instructions in
    their use.
  • DIDO2 will provide greater functionality and
    operability

8
Browse
  • Does not support browsing
  • Support combinatorial browsing of categories
  • Provide comprehensive (lots of categories)
including sub-categories and allow for those to
    be combined as well

9
Keyword search
  • Supports term searching of no more than two
    terms.
  • Defaults to Boolean OR
  • Support Google-like searching (complex or simple
queries, AND/OR/NOT, exact phrase and stemming
  • Provide truncation support
  • Provide as many of these functions from the
    simple search form as possible
  • Allow the users to choose the number of displayed
results from the simple keyword search screen
  • Provide simple guidelines for using the search
    features

10
Advanced search
  • No advanced searching capabilities
  • More robust search feature/capabilities

11
Results
  • Provides non-standardized metadata
  • Provides one image resolution of inadequate size
  • Checkbox purposes not clear
  • Need to provide standard format for metadata
    displayed
  • Need to provide multiple image sizes to allow for
    multiple uses
  • Display bib-record like (continuous) for easier
copying and pasting (not HTML HTML formatting is
picked up when coping and pasting)
  • Remove code as a sort option
  • Label the purpose of the checkboxes more clearly
    provide clear instructions

12
Full results
  • No search/refine bar
  • Displays metadata in continuous fashion.
    Metadata in non-standardized form
  • No subject headings
  • Add search/refine bar to the page
  • Display metadata in a continuous fashion (not
    tabular or fielded)
  • Link subject headings to generate new search
  • Label the purpose of the checkboxes more clearly

13

14
Where to From Here?
  • The Digital Library Program and the Fine Arts
Slide Library will convene an official project
team to discuss findings and individual progress
    thus far
  • Cataloging standards need to be established
before an interface to the collection can be
    implemented
  • Further contextual inquiry sessions will be
scheduled with Fine Arts, other Humanities
faculty and image managers from such
departments as the IDS to gather data from a
broader user group (art versus documentary
    images)
  • Human Subjects Committee approved future studies
    12/03
  • In-depth assessment, based on recommendations
    presented, of the three implementation
    alternatives is necessary homegrown, licensed
    vendor, and open-source technology.
