The Dangers of Excess
  • Experts Warn of Obesity Pandemic
  • 5 September , 2006
  • People all over the world are getting fat to the
point that it is jeopardizing their health, a
group of international experts has warned.
  • Convening the International Congress on Obesity,
Professor Paul Zimmet, an Australian diabetes
    researcher, called obesity "an international
    scourge.
  • "It's as big a threat as global warming and bird
flu," Zimmet told the gathering of 2,500 obesity
    experts and health officials.
  • Skinny Models Ban
  • 20 September 2006
  • THE Clothes Show stepped into the campaign
against stick-thin models yesterday when it
pledged not to use girls who are too skinny.
  • Boss Gavin Brown said "Girls do not need to be a
size 00 to make it as a model or look good. To
prove this, none of the gorgeous models in our
December show will be size 00."
  • Five models were banned from Madrid's Pasarela
Cibeles fashion show yesterday because their
    image was "sickness not health".
  • Others refused to be weighed and were fired.

  • Fat pets warned over lifestyles
  • The unhealthy lifestyle of many Britons is
rubbing off on their pets, with an increasing
number suffering from heart disease and diabetes,
    a study suggests.
  • London's pets were found to have the fourth
highest rates for diabetes and heart disease,
which the PDSA said could be attributed to busy
lifestyles, the dangers of intense traffic and a
    lack of green spaces.
  • "We often treat pets as a member of the family,
and as a result, it's inevitable our diet and
exercise choices will have an impact on their
health and well-being too," the PDSA said.
  • Offering advice for breaking out of bad habits,
it suggested "With summer on the way, what
better time to start walking together?"
  • Both diabetes and heart disease are linked to
poor diet and lack of exercise.
  • Can Exercise Can Be Hazardous to Your Health?
  • A healthy amount of exercise can improve both
your outlook on life and your health, but when
exercise consumes your life, your mind and body
    pay the price.
  • The effects of compulsive exercise may include
  • ?Stress fractures and overuse injuries
  • ? Damaged bones
  • ? Fatigue/exhaustion
  • ? Depression
  • ? Obsessive thoughts in which self-worth is
measured only in terms of performance and
    appearance
  • ? Withdrawing from society, relationships, and
    career
  • ? If an exercise addict also uses steroid
drugs, effects may include blurred vision,
  • hallucinations, rages and tantrums, depression,
acne, increased blood pressure, joint pain, and
    loss of sex drive.

  • 495,000 run up debt of over 20,000
  • NEARLY half a million Britons have unsecured
debts of more than 20,000, it was revealed
    today.
  • The alarming research showed that 495,614 people
have run up big debts on a combination of credit
cards, personal loans, overdrafts and borrowing
    from family or friends.
  • Of this number, nearly 120,000 owe more than
20,000 on credit cards, and 29,828 have
    overdrafts in excess of 20,000.
  • Nearly 150,000 have personal loans of more than
20,000, and more than 60,000 owe 20,000 or more
to family or friends. The study, which does not
include home loans, was carried out by debt
    experts One Advice.
  • It showed nearly one in six people worry about
their ability to manage debt. More than 4.2m
people - 17 of adults with any outstanding debts
    - said they were concerned or very concerned
    about their borrowing.
  • Retailers call for rate cut after bloody week on
    High Street
  • A leading retail lobby group has called on the
Bank of England to reduce the cost of borrowing
after a week that has seen two high profile
casualties of the downturn in consumer spending.
  • The British retail consortium (BRC) said a cut in
interest rates was needed to bring relief to
retailers after its monthly shop price index
showed non-food prices were down on a year ago.
  • "Retailers are keeping prices down and doing what
they can to stimulate consumer spending by
improving the value they offer their customers,"
    he said.

  • Marriage makes both sexes happy
  • Both men and women are happier if they are
    married, a study suggests.
  • Researchers in Australia have found that contrary
to popular belief both sexes benefit from
    marriage.
  • It has long been believed that men benefit more
from tying the knot than women.
  • Studies carried out in the 1970s, which are still
widely supported now, suggested that marriage
increased stress levels among women and
    effectively "drove them crazy".
  • But psychologist Dr David de Vaus from La Trobe
University in Melbourne says his study debunks
that theory. He looked at data from 10,641 adults
taken from the 1996 national survey of mental
    health in Australia.
  • He found that married men and women suffered the
same levels of stress, with one in eight
    reporting symptoms.
  • Being single has its advantages.
  • For the male it is the freedom to watch Match of
The Day with a nuclear strength curry on your lap
and a can of premium lager in easy reach. For the
female it is the opportunity to buy 10 pairs of
shoes on a shopping bender, without a constant
    dissenting voice at the shoulder.
  • Vicky Stewart is happily single at the age of
34."The disadvantage is that there is no-one to
share the cost of the mortgage and the bills, but
it is not lonely because I live in an area where
I have a lot of friends and the local bar is
where I used to work, so there is a sense of
    community."
  • She typifies a social trend, with the proportion
of households consisting of a single person below
retirement age trebling since the 1970s.
  • Overall, single-person households are now 29 of
the total, and that is predicted to increase with
the number of one-person households exceeding
those with two or more adults during 2016.

As you get older your body has different needs
  • Lifetime Homes Flexibility Adaptability
  • The Lifetime Homes concept is the incorporation
of 16 design features that together create a
flexible blueprint for accessible and adaptable
    housing in any setting
  • Goes way beyond current Part M regulations for
    access and useability

71
Clogging of the arteries
  • If you get it wrong it could be very costly
  • The Holmewood Estate was built in the 1950s on
land about 150m above sea level on the south-east
edge of Bradford. The estate was planned without
individual gardens, and with little regard to
shelter or aspect, and after 40 years remained as
housing in a largely useless landscape of
windswept grass, with no motivation for residents
to become interested in caring for it.
  • A five year project cost nearly 40M to put this
    right!

How does it work?
  • 8 sections, each underpinned by a series of
    questions
  • Each question has a minimum standard, as well as
    good and best practice answers
  • Score highest marks for best, no marks for a
    plain pass
  • Each question is weighted clear indication as
    to major issues
  • Reports are generated when the checklist is
