Title: A Webquest about

1
A Webquest about
Designed By Scott Hauck For EDU 318

Introduction
  • What is a Watch? What is a Warning?  Tornados
can form any time of the year, but are most
common during the months of March, April, May,
and June, and usually occur between 3 p.m. and 9
p.m. Where will you be when a tornado strikes?
You could be at home, school, outdoors, or in a
public place.  If you have a disaster plan your
chances of staying safe during a tornado will be
greater.   What would you do if basic
    services--water, gas, electricity or telephones
were cut off? Participation in this WebQuest will
answer these questions and prepare you for a
    tornado watch, warning, or disaster.

3
The Tasks
  • You will be working with a small group of
students in your class.  As a member of your
group, you will need to learn what to do when a
tornado strikes if you are at
  • Home School Outdoors
    Public places
  • Your group will be responsible for completing the
    following activities
  • Signs of Favorable Conditions for Tornados
  • Creating a Fujita Tornado Damage Scale
  • Developing a list of items needed in a Disaster
    Supply Kit
  • Creating a Family Disaster Plan.

4
The Process
  • 1. Go to the links below and complete the
    activities.
  • Home School Outdoors
    Public Places
  •
  • 2. Create a poster showing what you learned and
share with your group.  The poster should include
at least five facts and a picture or drawing of
    tornados.
  • 3. Go to What's Happening Now to see what
disasters might happen where you live and also
your local radar at Interactive Weather
    Information Network.
  • 4. Work with your group to create a Family
Disaster Plan. You will need to
  • Make a list of what would be needed in a Disaster
    Supply Kit.
  • Create a Family Disaster Plan.

5
  • 5. To create this project use information linked
to this title Signs of Favorable Conditions for
Tornados. You are to list numerous ways to tell
if the storm coming in your area could create a
Tornado. List conditions, types of storms,
things you would look for in cloud formation or
    wind.
  • 6. In creating your Fujita Tornado Damage Scale,
use the links attached to the Fujita Tornado
Damage Scale to assist with your project. Another
    good website is Discovery Channel.
  • 7. You must become a Disaster Action Kid and get
a certificate from FEMA to get full credit for
    Webquest.

Conclusion
  • Over the years, many people are killed or
seriously hurt by tornados because they truly do
not understand the meaning of a tornado watch or
tornado warning. The information learned in this
WebQuest could save your life if a tornado
happens where you live.  After you hear the watch
or warning issued by your city or local news
channel, you must make the proper decision to
seek shelter before the storm arrives or wait to
see if conditions worsen.  This could be one of
the most important decisions you will ever make
    in your life!
