Map presentation requirements

• Starting with Assignment 2, all maps submitted
  for assignments are expected to be
  presentation-quality
• Expected to meet requirements outlined in this
  presentation

Map presentation assignment grading

• Assignment 2 will have points awarded
  specifically for presentation
• Following assignments will have points awarded
  for assigned content
• However, points will be deducted for not meeting
  presentation requirements

Legibility and neatness

• Final printouts very legible and neat
• Colors or shades of gray, point symbols, lines
  selected to make features on map clear and
  legible
• Features symbolized by quality or quantity should
  be clearly distinguishable on the map

Size and alignment

• For maps showing multiple data frames mapping the
  same area (not reference maps)
• Multiple maps should be the same size and
  appropriately aligned with one another
• Can do by eye, do not need to use guidelines

Balance

• Elements on map should be appropriately balanced,
  proportionate to importance
• For example, legends, north arrows, scales should
  be subsidiary to main map

Reference geography

• Choice of reference geography left to you
• Data available in J426Files\Basemap folder
• Make judgments about what would be appropriate
  for each map
• Do not necessarily go overboard and add
  everything available

Required map elements

• Title(s)
• Scale(s)
• North arrow(s)
• Legend(s) (where needed)
• Your name, as preparer
• Neatline(s)

Legends

• Required when features classified by quantity or
  quality
• Not required for reference geography
• Not required when nature of information on map
  obvious from title
• Always include meaningful layer names, not
  default file names
