Hyphens -
  • Use a hyphen to divide a word hang-
  • ing over the end of a line
  • Divide at the syllable
  • Do not divide a one syllable wo-
  • rd
  • Do not divide so that one letter stands a-
  • lone
  • Divide an already hyphenated word only at the
    existing hyphen

Hyphens -
  • Use a hyphen with compound numbers from
    twenty-one to ninety-nine
  • Thirty-three, fifty-seven
  • Use with fractions used as modifiers
  • Two-thirds majority (but two thirds of the class)
  • Use with prefixes All-, ex-, great-, and self-
  • All-purpose, great-grandmother, self-control
  • Use with all prefixes before a proper noun/adj

  • Use with suffixes -elect, -free

Parentheses ()
  • Generally, no punctuation before the (), when
    theyre part of another sentence.
  • However, A parenthetical sentence that stands by
    itself
  • Begins with a capital letter
  • Ends with a period, ?, or !
  • Mark your answers with a pencil. (Do not use
    ink.)

  • Use to enclose an explanation or added info
    within quoted or parenthetical material

  • Dont overuse any of these it can be confusing!
