• Difficulty with academic achievement and progress
• Uneven pattern of development
• Difficulties are not due to environmental
  disadvantage, mental retardation or emotional
  disturbance

CAUSES/EXPLANATIONS

• Maturational lag
• Unexplained nervous system disorders
• Pre-maturity or injuries/diseases in early
  childhood
• Role of heredity
• More common in boys
• May be linked to structure of English language

• Spoken language (listening and speaking)
• Written language (reading, writing, spelling)
• Math (operations and concepts)
• Reasoning (organizing and integrating thoughts)
• Memory (information and instructions)

CHARACTERISTICS

• Can be a long list but remember
• No one will have all the characteristics
• Among certain populations, some characteristics
  are more common than others
• All people have 2 or 3 of them to some degree
• The number of characteristics does not indicate
  whether the disability is mild or severe. It is
  more important to see if they are chronic or
  appear in clusters
