1
Suicide
  • A Study in Sociology

Presented by Raul Garcia
2
Extra Social FactorsChapters 1 - 4
  • Emile Durkheim begins with extra-social factors
and more specifically the abnormalities of the
mind and its psychopathic states. Durkheim points
out mental conditions that can conclude irregular
mindsets as the reason for suicide.
  • He then moves on the normal psychological states
with the characteristics of culture, heredity,
and race as a differentiating factor.
  • Also, Durkheim looks over the cosmic affects that
could contribute, and since different parts of
countries tend to have different rates of
suicide, it would be presumed necessary to call
it to question. More so, he looks at different
coordinates, to cities and farm areas, to the
    overall climate and temperature.
  • The final chapter in extra-social factors deals
with one of the most curious aspects of human
nature and psychological tendencies in humans,
    imitation.

3
Social Causes and Social TypesChapters 1 - 6
  • In book two, Durkheim closes in on social causes
and social types, starting with a how to in
determining these classifications which takes a
further analysis into suicide and social factors
    than before.
  • The next chapter sorts through egoistic suicide
which compares and analyzes different religions
from different regions and finding their details
    in relation to suicide.
  • With a continuation into egoistic suicide
Durkheim extends his analysis to married and
unmarried couples along with, political changes,
age, sex, excessive individualism and again,
    regional differences.
  • Going off of the previous chapter, altruistic
suicide becomes the opposite and declares suicide
as a strong cultural, which found mostly within
primitive cultures, attachment with society or a
group. He then goes into a great deal of his
famous anomie or anomic suicide. Anomie explains
the ideas of the erosion or decay in a society
due to social or economic collapse. The idea of
anomie brought forth is very relevant and applies
to todays society and seemingly all prior. The
last chapter of the second book goes into a
detailed look at everything that is covered thus
far. The chapter is called individual forms of
the different types of suicide and describes that
    exactly

4
General Nature of Suicide as a Social
PhenomenonChapters 1 - 3
  • In the third book of Durkeims Suicide titled
General Nature of Suicide as a Social Phenomenon
delves deeper into The Social Element of Suicide.
  • The first chapter of book three describes the
    direct result of sociological environments
contributing to suicide. In more detail, He
explains the ideas from a year to year basis and
how the numbers never change but people and
    lifestyles do.
  • In chapter 2 Relations of Suicide with Other
Social Phenomena Durkheim goes over the
differences in history as far as moral
perspectives on religion. Some societies deem it
completely immoral and others see it as
reasonable if for good reason. Also an analysis
is made with the inclusion of homicide versus
suicide and if one should be prosecuted for it.
  • The final chapter in the book is Practical
Consequences reviews over any thought regarding
all of the applications of prior theories and
reasons for suicide. His analysis ends with his
belief under the idea of progression and
applicability within a new developing, current,
    society.

My Thoughts
  • Detail
  • Limits- other cultures, religion
  • Sexist? Or social structure?
  • Least vs. Most likely
  • You do not control your actions, society does.
  • Dont want to kill yourself? Procreate.
