3Roles and Responsibilities
- Chief Academic Officer (CAO)
- Concerned with operations downwards in the chart.
- Oversees curriculum concerns such as
- 1. Academic rigor
- 2. Needs of students, community, industry,
outside disciplines and courses, and so on
regarding the curriculum. - 3. Transfer issues
- 4. Assessment
- 5. Course sequencing
- 6. Degree requirements
- 7. Certificate requirements
- 8. Common features of syllabi applicable to all
courses - Supervises Director of Learning Resources,
Academic Officers of Ft. Riley Campus and Barton
Campus, Coordinator of Developmental Education
and Director of Assessment.

- Chief Academic Officer
- Oversees curriculum concerns as listed above and
with curriculum matters of programs. The primary
concern is external customers. - Supervises various Associate Deans, Coordinators,
and Directors as appropriate to individual
locations

- Associate Deans
- Supervise curriculum but not at the course level.
- Oversee logistics such as scheduling and
functionality of courses in particular area.
(ensures that the course taught meets the overall
requirements for certification but not how to
teach or what methods to use). - For example AD Environmental/Military/Vocational-F
t. Riley oversees such courses as in the HZMT
program. - Directly supervise appropriate Directors,
faculty, and staff.

- Directors (EXCEPT FOR THE DIRECTOR OF
ASSESSMENT) - Focus on specific concerns within that particular
program. Are not involved with curriculum
matters. - Directly supervise appropriate staff.

- Involved with curricular issues. Help coordinate
assessment tools. - Coordinates with Division Chairs.

- Course Authors
- Course Authors will be the expert in regards to
that course. - Course Authors will closely coordinate with the
Division Chair because of the variety of subjects
under the Division Chair. -
- Development of the course syllabus on file
- Dissemination of such syllabus to ALL instructors
of that course - Acting as a contact point for instructors
regarding course changes - Standardization of particular sections of the
course syllabi - Participate in activities regarding assessment

- Full time and Associate faculty may serve as
Course Authors. - Course Author should be a voluntary position
- Credentialed and Experienced
- Course Disagreements
- Handled at Lowest Level
- Final Decision with the CAO

- Division Chairs oversee various courses within
larger categories. - Voluntary
- 9 hours release time suggested
- Work with Course Authors, Associate Deans, and
Directors to maintain adequate levels of
communion.

- Maintaining electronic versions of official
syllabi - Disseminating course syllabi to instructors of
courses - Flow and sequencing of courses
- Mediate disputes amongst various faculty members
concerning individual courses.

14Compliance with Charter Goals
- Provides for faculty control of the curriculum by
empowering the faculty to develop and improve
curricular issues, such as outcomes/competencies,
textbooks, etc. - Applies across all teaching media and in all
teaching venues through the use of Division
Chairs to oversee the curriculum in all venues
and media. - Promotes a single curriculum under a single Chief
Academic Officer by placing Instruction and
Curriculum under one CAO.

- Has clear lines of communication and authority by
differentiating between lines of communication
and authority. - Ensures equity between and amongst the Colleges
instructional constituencies power sharing
between Course Authors and Division Chairs. - Requires the minimal amount of bureaucracy to
implement and maintain diverting duties from
administration to Course Authors Division
Chairs.

- Approximately 150,000
- Increased cost associated with the creation of
the Academic Officers at both campuses - 70K per
year. - Increased cost associated with the creation of
the Associate Deans at Fort Riley - 30K per
year. - Increased cost associated with the creation of
the Division Chairs - 50K per year.
17Advantages
- Allows for a higher degree of faculty control of
curriculum. - Clearly defines roles and responsibilities.
- Creates a sense of community between various
locations.
18Disadvantages
- Some will not see the changes as desirable.
- A high level of faculty involvement is
essential. - Additional money will be required.
