Title: Memories of Our Third Grade Year

1
Memories of Our Third Grade Year
  • As told by Mrs. Hillebrechts Class
  • 2004-2005
  • Robert Hunter Elementary School

2
These memories were gathered in Mrs.
Hillebrechts classroom. The students each
created a slide, and Ms. Wintermute, the computer
teacher put them together to make this slide show!
We hope you enjoy the show!

Cursive
  • Have you been waiting for cursive all year?
Its like regular writing, but you have a lot of
curves when you write cursive letters and connect
them. I will give you an example of how to write
the word (crayon) in cursive. (crayon). I know
it looks a little weird , but thats how you
write it. When I first learned cursive, it was
really hard because you have to write your words
on a slant, and I had trouble with my slant.
Once you practice writing cursive, its not that
hard. Cursives really fun and I think you will
enjoy it a lot. Have fun in third grade!

The Planetarium
  • Have you ever been to a Planetarium? Do you know
what a planetarium is? Well, if you ask me, a
planetarium is a place where you look up at the
ceiling and watch a fantastic show about space!
  • I have been to a planetarium and it was at
Raritan Valley Community College. I got the best
seat in the planetarium. When the show started, I
looked up at the ceiling. The lights were turned
off, and I saw thousands of stars. I saw nine
planets, and our big yellow, orange sun that was
    amazingly bright!
  • In third grade, we learned all about our solar
system which includes the nine planets, all their
moons and our sun. Learning about the
constellations was very interesting. Have fun
    blasting off into space!

Recorders
  • Do you want to learn to play a musical
instrument? When you are in 3rd grade, you will
learn to play the recorder in music class. It is
hard at first to learn how to play a recorder. If
you try hard and practice you will get better at
it. When I first came to this school, I didnt
know how to play this instrument, but the music
teacher helped me, and she will help you, too!

Chapter Books
  • Have you ever read a really good chapter book?
I have read a lot of chapter books this year.
Ive read the Chronicles of Narnia, Little House
in the Big Woods and Ramona Quimby Age 8. If you
want to read any of these books ask Mrs. H.
These books are very good books and Mrs. H
recommends them. I absolutely loved The
Chronicles of Narnia. Theyre making a movie
about it and it will come out in December.
Chapter books rule! In reading groups you only
read chapter books and theyre all really good.
Some of the books youll read are Sarah, Plain
and Tall, Chocolate Fever, Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory , Help! Im a Prisoner in the
Library and many more! Have lots of fun with
Mrs. H and have a great year.

Roxaboxen
  • Have you ever heard of the story Roxaboxen ?
Its a cool fun story in the social studies
textbook. The story is about children in the
desert town, and the children pretend to make
houses using bricks and cement, but they really
use rocks for the outline of the houses and boxes
for beds, couches, chairs, and other
things. There are multi colored pebbles and the
mayor of the town said that these pebbles can be
the money of Roxaboxen. If you had a car in this
imaginary place, then you would have to drive at
a certain speed or else you would go to jail. But
if you had a horse, you could go as fast as the
wind. The children also had pretend wars, boys
against girls. If a boy/girl gets you before you
get to the fort, they are out, but if you get in
the fort, then you are safe.

D.E.A.R.
  • D.E.A.R. stands for Drop Everything and
Read. During D.E.A.R. I like to read Goosebumps
books. I like to read on the rug. You can have
D.E.A.R. when you are done with your work. When
you read books on the rug, they have to be
chapter books. Some books may have pictures, but
they should mainly be interesting chapter books.
When you find an interesting or wonderful word in
your book, you can write it down on a bookmark.
When you find out what it means, you can share it
with the class. Read and grow!

Resident Expert Project
  • Is there a special topic that interests you?
Would you like to learn more and at the same time
get extra credit? If you do, it might be fun to
    try a Resident Expert Project!
  • These projects are fun because you get to choose
a cool topic, which can be ANYTHING! You could
research human bones or chimpanzees or even try
electricity. Whatever you can think of that is
cool and interesting to you, can become an
    independent project.
  • After you research the fact, you can display
them in one of these cool ways tri-folds,
computer slides, written reports, graphs or maybe
a new display you made up! Whichever you choose,
be proud of your finished work!
  • If you decide to do a Resident Expert Project,
do your best, but have fun with it, too.
  • Good Luck!

Shenanigans Day!
  • Do you like leprechauns? In third grade youll
celebrate Shenanigans Day. The leprechauns left
gold and green glitter on our desks every time we
came back from our special. Whenever we left our
room, strange things happened! We also made
potato people. You can make them anything you
want them to be. Mine was a rock star. He had
toothpicks sticking out of his head and he was
wearing a cape. I planted real grass which grew
out of his head! We made leprechaun want ads,
too. We wrote a want ad which stated what your
leprechauns must do or know. Sometimes a
leprechaun will even write back! Have fun on
    March 17th!

The Cat and Dog Debate
  • In 3rd grade you will be involved in something
called the Great Cat and Dog Debate. This is when
you choose to vote on cats or dogs as your
favorite pets. You get to write edit and type your
story and chose a cool picture on the computer
for a cover! I chose dogs because cats are lazy
!!!! Other people thought cats rock! Do to want
to do this? Its a lot of fun to do. It is also
fun to listen to everyone's opinions on voting
for cats or dogs. I hope that you will enjoy 3rd
grade. Its a lot of fun! Which pet will you vote
    for?

Homework
  • Do you like to do homework that is super
challenging? Homework is the best thing in third
grade because it is a lot more challenging than
second grade homework. In math youll even have
    math division problems.

Resident Expert Project
  • Do you know what a resident expert project is?
It is a project where you get to select a topic
that you are interested in. Which topic would
you pick? I did research on human bones. My
classmate, Emma, also did the resident expert
project. She researched on chimpanzees. We
helped each other with our research and
presentations. Both of us really had fun. I
wrote facts like an adult has 206 bones and a
newborn baby has more than 300 bones! Have fun in
    third grade!

Health
  • In third grade you are going to learn lots of
interesting things in health. Health class is
where youll learn about the body like the
digestive system. You will be learning about
teeth, saliva glands and the esophagus. Your
esophagus is your throat. Making a skeleton is
a fun project and we made posters, too! Youll
play fun fact games while the teacher is helping
    you review for Health tests!

Read-Aloud Books
  • Do you like to listen to a good story ? In third
grade your teacher will read lots of good stories
out loud. You can listen or draw a picture of
whats happening. Some of my favorite read-alouds
were Muggie Maggie, Shiloh, Ralph S. Mouse and
Because of Winn- Dixie. Which book would you like
    to hear Mrs. Hillebrecht read?

Myths Marshmallows
  • Did you ever hear about a fun activity called
Myths Marshmallows? I will bet you will love it
because you get to make a picture of any
constellation in the sky. Then you will create a
myth about how your constellation got into the
sky. Next, you will draw your constellation on a
black piece of paper. Then the teacher will give
you a straight pin and youll get to prick holes
in the paper, following the outline of your
constellation. The really fun part is when you
sit around a pretend campfire androast
marshmallows, while your classmates read their
constellation stories. When theyre done, their
pin-pricked constellations are placed on the
overhead and projected up on the ceiling. I
chose to create a myth about Taurus the Bull.
    Which constellation will you chose?

Hat Day
  • On Hat Day in third grade youll get to wear your
favorite hat all day! It is really fun. Youll do
lots of fun activities and even make a drawing of
yourself wearing your favorite hat. Caps for Sale
was a funny book about a peddler who sold lots of
caps. As he rested under a tree, the monkeys in
that tree stole the peddlers caps! Its very
funny how he got his caps back! Have fun on Hat
    Day!

Space
  • Have you ever wonted to visit the solar system? I
havent, but I have learned a lot about it. Let
me tell you some facts about the solar system.
Did you know that Earth is about 93000000 miles
from the sun? And there is a really big storm on
Jupiter called the great red spot. It could
    swallow the earth! Jupiter
is the biggest planet in the Solar system. The
planets farthest from the sun are the gas giants!

Bat Day
  • Did you ever have a batty day in school?
Well, in third grade there is such a day called
Bat Day! It is when you go to school and learn
about bats all day long! Every half hour, youll
hum a little tune (thats a little like Batman).
The first person to hum the tune gets a card that
has facts about bats on it. You get to read it to
the class. Youll keep on doing it until the day
is over. Youll also get to read lots of books
about bats at the back table. On Bat Day we all
wore bat color, black, brown or gray. The
funniest thing was when Mrs. Hillebrecht wore a
    bat hat!

My Teacher
  • Did you ever have a really nice teacher? I have.
Mrs. Hillebrecht is the really nice teacher.
She makes up fun homework. She also makes up fun
projects, like a Roxaboxen town. Mrs.
Hillebrecht thinks of cool thinks for computers.
My class and I did a lot of science projects, and
we also typed a lot of our writing. When I
learned about the Lenape Indians, we watched some
videos. I liked my teacher Mrs. Hillebrecht, and
    I know you will too.
