Word Choice EQ- How do words paint a picture for
the reader? This trait focuses on the correct
and accurate use of language. Look for Words
that are vivid and precise the language is
appealing, memorable, and noteworthy. Effective
and original use of everyday words misuse of
language or over-reliance on the thesaurus tend
to hamper the effectiveness of good word choice.

Figurative Language Alliteration- repetition of
consonant sounds in oral or written language. Ex.
delicate dancing daredevils drop down
daintily Hyperbole- an extreme exaggeration or
extravagant statement used as a figure of
speech. Ex. I could sleep for a year I am so
exhausted. Idiom- a type of figurative language
that is peculiar to a group of people. Ex. If it
was a snake it would have bitten you. Simile- a
figure of speech that makes a comparison using
like or as. Ex. A gentle summer wind feels like
a soft cotton sheet gently brushing my cheek.

Metaphor- a figure of speech that compares two
different things without using a word of
comparison such as like or as. Ex. The
streetlight was my security guard. Personificatio
n- a figure of speech in which an idea, object,
or animal is given qualities of a person. Ex.
The rock refused to budge. Onomatopoeia- the
use of words whose sounds make you think of their
meanings. Ex. buzz, thump, snap, crackle, pop
