  • An expression that cannot be understood from the
    meaning of its separate words, but must be
    learned as a whole.
  • Examples
  • Put a sock in it!
  • Break a leg!
  • Its raining cats and dogs.

  • An imaginative comparison between two unlike
    things in which one thing is described as though
    it were another thing.
  • Examples
  • The wind is ruffling the tawny pelt of Africa.
  • Our English homework is a piece of cake!
  • My college roommate was a pig.

  • A figure of speech in which a nonhuman thing or
    quality is talked about as if it were human or
    alive.
