Background

• The Small, Secure, Transportable, Autonomous
  Reactor (SSTAR) is a UC/LLNL/LANL original
  concept, we are clearly identified by DOE/Others
  as the initial advocates
• Derived from and supported by UCB ENHS project
• The GEN IV LFR project is currently promoting
  this concept
• UC/LLNL/LANL are major contributors to the LFR
  project
• Continuation of SSTAR within the GNEP can be
  structured to provide a useful supplement to the
  ABR and its fuel cycle program

Compatibility and Potential Contributions to GNEP

• SSTAR can
• Perform the actinide burning and waste management
  goals of GNEP
• Clearly achieve the proliferation reductions
  objectives of GNEP
• Implement the take back fuel cycle
• Address growth in world use of nuclear with
  strong proliferation controls
• Be integrated into UREX fuel recycling as well
  as pyro-reprocessing
• Provide the most robust safety margins of any
  reactor type
• Provide constructive interfaces with
  international fast reactor development interests

SSTAR-LFR may be the current best UC dominated
project that maps precisely into multiple GNEP
missions

Recommendation

• We should consider developing a proposal to GNEP
  for a joint UC/LLNL/LANL Project that takes
  advantage of the SSTAR/LFR experience
