History Of The Gold Eagle
The United States Congress authorized the
production of American Gold Eagle Coins by
passing the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The
program was supposed to have four different
weights (1 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz, 1/10 oz) and two
different versions, according to the legislation
(bullion and proof). In 1986, the first American
Gold Eagle coins were created and made available
for purchase. The bullion gold coin program was
available in all four weights, whereas the proof
version was only available in 1986 with a 1 oz
coin. In 1987, the proof program was expanded to
include 1/2 oz coins, followed by 1/4 oz and
1/10 oz coins in 1988.

What Is Proof Coins?
Proof coinage refers to early samples of a coin
issue traditionally made for checking the dies
(as in demonstrating that something is true) and
archival purposes. Polishing the dies was
usually involved in the preparation of a proof
striking. They are differentiated from regular
