Civil Rights Act of 1964

• The act outlaws discrimination on the basis of
  race, color, religion, and national origin in
  most hotels, restaurants, and places of
  entertainment.

• Does not cover discrimination based on sex,
  marital status, or disability.

• Exempt from the act are
• Private clubs - Selective in choosing members,
  self governed, no advertising, and a nonprofit
  organization.

• State Civil Rights Law
• Covers businesses that are purely interstate in
  nature, that is, not involved in interstate
  commerce.

• No law offers protection against discrimination
  in places of public accommodation to people who
  are barefoot, dressed in jeans, or of a
  particular age.

• Persons who do not leave the premises after being
  requested to leave, or those that enter the
  premises despite a warning not to, may be guilty
  of criminal trespass.
