TODAYS PRESENTATION TOPICS
  • Professionalism and Professional Societies
  • What is ASME?
  • The Benefits of Membership
  • Technical
  • Non Technical
  • Why Should You Join?

4
WHAT IS A PROFESSIONAL?
  • A person who applies certain knowledge and skill,
usually obtained by college education, for the
    service of people.
  • A person who observes an acceptable code of
conduct and uses discretion and judgement in
    performing their duties.
  • A person who has legal status, uses professional
titles and associates together in groups with
    like individuals.

5
WHAT IS PROFESSIONALISM?
  • Professionalism is an individual state of mind.
  • While the acquisition of knowledge may make a
person more skilled, knowledge itself does not
often promote the desire within oneself to be
responsive to the needs of people.
  • For the engineer, professionalism implies that he
or she will make maximum use of their skill and
knowledge and will use their competence to the
    fullest extent.

6
THE ROLE OF THE PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY
  • Professional Societies play a pivotal role in
    fostering professionalism.
  • Professionals band themselves together to
  • Exchange ideas
  • Improve their knowledge
  • Learn new skills and techniques
  • Meet and network with professionals in other
    fields and industries
  • Set forth and adhere to a code of conduct
  • Promote the profession and attract qualified
    persons to enter the profession
