Title: GEIF Advisement

1
GEIF Advisement
  • General Education Intellectual Foundations
  • Updated list of approved IF courses online
  • http//www.buffalostate.edu/intellectualfoundation
    s
  • For corrections to students audit sheets
  • E-mail audit_at_buffalostate.edu

2
General Advisement Issues
  • Readmitted students will most often be placed in
GE2K with few credits, they will be placed in IF
  • They can petition to switch back to GEC or GE2K
will need support note if they can graduate more
    quickly
  • Students continuously enrolled in GE2K or GEC
cannot petition to go to GEIF
  • DN audit sheet--Credits completed
  • Be VERY carefulDN counts all the credits
students have signed up for, even current courses
that are not yet finished. Schedule changes
failed courses can cause surprises later!
  • Look for current courses on audit sheet

3
DN Non-Visual Requirements Box
  • BSC quality point average (cumulative GPA)
  • Must achieve 2.0 to graduate
  • Upper division (see next slide)
  • Campus residency
  • Major residency
  • Major GPA
  • Must achieve 2.0 to graduate

4
Upper-Division Courses
  • Upper division courses are generally 300 or 400
    level
  • Foreign Language 201 and 202 also count as UD if
taken in college (but NOT required for GEIF in
    any degree)
  • All students must complete a minimum of 45
    credits of upper division courses
  • Senate currently reconsidering this issue
  • Most (but not all) majors have a high percentage
    of upper division courses

5
Foundations of Inquiry
  • BSC 101--New course covers
  • Introduction to the Liberal Arts
  • Critical thinking, analysis of arguments
  • Research skills and evaluation of information
    sources
  • BSC 101 required of all students who start
college at BSC Fall 2006 and later
  • Does NOT apply to transfer students now
  • Fall 2008 is date in current plan to have
transfer students start taking BSC 301
  • Being considered in Senate

6
Basic WritingCWP 101 and CWP 102
  • Check audit sheet to see if student has any
    exemptions (e.g., AP course)
  • Graded A, B, C, E
  • No option to take these courses pass/fail
  • No grades of C-, D or D supposed to be assigned
  • Occasional mistakes occur
  • Report them to Dr. Susan Leist, Writing Program,
    TR 100
  • DN will NOW enforce rule but did not until very
    recently
  • Students should follow college E-repeat policy to
    retake if necessary

7
Math/Quantitative Reasoning Requirement
  • Requirement may be met through credit-bearing HS
    (AP) courseworkevaluated by Admissions from
    student-submitted HS information.
  • ONE of the following courses (one-course rule is
grandfathered to GE2K students also, although
they have a longer list of possible courses)
  • MAT 103 Introduction to Contemporary Mathematics
  • MAT 122 Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced
    Standpoint
  • MAT 126 Calculus
  • MAT 161 Calculus I
  • MAT 311 Introduction to Probability and
    Statistics

8
Cognate Foundations
  • Need 6 credits in each of four categories
  • Arts
  • Humanities
  • Natural Science
  • Social Science
  • ONLY designated courses count
  • See GEIF quad fold pamphlet
  • Web site will have newly-approved courses added
  • Two different course prefixes must be represented
in each category (see next slide)

9
Two Prefix Rule for GEIF Categories
  • Courses must come from at least two disciplines
    (prefixes) for these Cognate Foundations
  • Arts
  • Humanities
  • Natural Science
  • Social Science
  • For example, dont recommend two DAN courses in
the Arts category, or two BIO courses in the
    Natural Science category.

10
Foundations of Civilizations
  • Foundations of Civilizations (American History)
    3 credits
  • Foundations of Civilizations (Western
    Civilization) 3 credits
  • Foundations of Civilizations (Non-Western
    Civilizations) 3 credits
  • Note Two-prefix rule no longer applies to these
categories for either GEIF or GE2K students

11
Additional GEIF Requirements(non-Foundations)
  • Technology and Society (3 credits)
  • Will be waived for transfer students with AA or
    AS degrees
  • Transfer courses will count if they meet the
    learning outcomes
  • Diversity (3 credits)
  • Basic Oral Communication
  • Will often be fulfilled in the major
  • More courses will be added this year and next as
    departments submit them
  • Writing Across the Curriculum
  • Foreign Language
  • see subsequent slides

12
Writing Across the Curriculum
  • Students must take 6 credits, usually two
    courses, designated Writing Intensive (W)
  • Examples ENG 300W, ANT 144W
  • A few departments use portfolio review to satisfy
    the requirement
  • Successful completion of ENG 102/CWP 102 is a
    prerequisite
  • Course must be designated W the semester it is
    taken
  • W courses must be taken at Buffalo State
  • Many, but not all, students satisfy this
requirement with courses in their major

13
Foreign Language
  • Requirement of proficiency at the 102 level for
    both BA and BS students
  • Can be satisfied with high school proficiency
  • One year in HS one semester here
  • There may be future proficiency test
complications (will depend on Senate decisions)
  • Placement exam needed?
  • Recommendation is for students to take the CLEP
    exam. Contact Admissions for information.
  • Sign language is allowed to substitute for
    Education, SLP, SWK students.
  • NOT approved for all BSC students

14
Double-Dipping
  • Double dip means that a course satisfies two
    requirements
  • Example SOC 240 counts both as Diversity and
Social Science Foundations, but its still only 3
    credits
  • Diversity courses can be double-dipped with ANY
other requirement (major, minor, GEIF, W, etc.)
  • W courses can be double-dipped in ANY way (major,
    minor, GEIF, diversity)
  • ONE course from the major can be double-dipped
into Foundations categories for GEIF students
  • NO double-dipping is allowed between
    Foundations categories

15
Repeating Courses/Pass-Fail
  • Students can repeat courses in which they earned
    E, F, U, D, D, C-
  • But TAP does not cover D, D, C- repeats
  • Cannot legally take a course for a third time
    without an approved petition
  • Appears as illegal repeat on transcript and
does not count in GPA without petition
  • Pass/fail option is approved by advisor
  • Major/minor courses cannot be taken pass-fail
  • Student must have 15 credits, 2.0 GPA
  • Only one P/F course per semester
  • Cannot use P/F to repeat a C-, D or D course, or
    to take ENG 101-102/CWP 101-102

16
Drop vs. Withdraw
  • Dropping occurs during the one-week drop-add
    period
  • Course never appears on transcript
  • No financial liability
  • No effect on financial aid or satisfactory
    academic progress (SAP)
  • Withdrawing occurs from Week 2 - end of semester
  • W appears on transcript, financial liability,
    counts against SAP
  • Course withdrawal deadline around 10th week of
    semester
  • Can withdraw from college (all courses) until
    Study Day
  • Leave of Absence deadline also Study Day (results
    in W grades)
  • Student needs a 2.0 or better GPA to take a leave
    of absence
  • Medical leaves can be granted retroactively with
    documentation-forms are processed through Weigel
    Health Center

17
Satisfactory Academic Progress and Financial Aid
  • Both TAP and Federal financial aid are contingent
    upon Satisfactory Academic Progress
    requirements
  • Students must be accepted into a major no later
    than completion of 57 credits
  • Federal aid will cover a maximum of 185 credits
    attempted
  • W, E, I, U, F, N count as attempted credits
  • TAP will cover a maximum of 8 semesters (except
for EOP students, who get 10 semesters)
  • TAP does NOT cover D, D, C- repeats
  • Financial aid is affected by GPA
  • A one-semester appeal is often possiblestudents
should follow instructions in letter from FA
    office
  • Academic level (class level) is determined, not
by how many years you have been in college, but
the number of credit hours successfully
    completed. (F 0-28 hrs. Soph 29-56 hrs.,
    etc.)
  • More information at http//www.buffalostate.edu/f

General Tips
  • Use the NEW GEIF advisement slips.
  • Always give student a completed, signed
advisement slip as official proof of advisement
    keep copy in file
  • Defense against allegations of mis-advisement
  • Sometimes advisers recommend specific courses.
For most GEIF requirements, students need only a
category, not a specific course, e.g.,
  • Specific Course GEIF Category
  • FAR 101 Arts
  • CHE 100 Natural Science
  • Please do not recommend specific course unless
you KNOW its open or it is needed for E-repeat
    or other reason.
