2
Program Focus
  • The College of Communications provides
high-quality communications education to a large
and diverse group of students. Our theoretical
and applied programs focus on ethics,
    citizenship, intellectual vigor and professional
    preparation.

3
  • With a strong tradition in the liberal arts and
social sciences, the academic programs of the
College share a common theoretical base which
identifies the elements of human communication
and the principles governing their use in all
    communicative processes essential to
contemporary society, namely, the spoken and
    written word and visual images.

4
  • Cal State Fullerton ranks 9th nationally for
awarding degrees to Hispanic students and 11th
    for degrees to Asian-American students.
  • Communications ranks 2nd and 3rd, respectively,
    for awarding bachelors degrees to
    Asian-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans
and is ranked 1st in California. Hispanic
Outlook ranked us 1st in California and 3rd in
the nation in degrees awarded to Hispanics.

5
  • Student Services within the College include
outreach to potential applicants, new student
    orientation, academic advisement, counseling and
    referrals, and leadership development.
  • The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs seeks to
engage members of the University in the process
of student advocacy, community building and
    collaborative learning thus facilitating
    student success.

General Guidance
  • A limited number of lower division coursework in
communications can be completed _at_ the CC.
  • Visit http//www.assist.org to find out what, if
any, courses have been articulated between your
community college and the intended major
    department at CSUF.

9
  • The Titan Degree Audit (TDA) is a tracking tool
that helps students understand how CC coursework
fits into the new BA requirements at CSUF.
  • Identifying the correct name of the major will
ensure that the TDA will reflect the varied
requirements needed to complete the BA degree.

10
Registration for New Majors
  • If a course taken at the CC is a PREREQUISITE for
an advanced course at CSUF/College of Comm,
  • Authorization is required by the department
office prior to the students online registration
    appointment.

11
Radio-TV-Film
  • Total units for graduation
  • 120 units
  • 36 major units
  • 12 major/collateral
  • units
  • 51 GE units
  • 21 free electives

12
RTVF Transfer Coursework
  • Lower Division courses
  • RTVF 100, 210, 220, 225, 250, 271, 272
  • If a student is not sure about a course at the
CC, go to the end and work backwards. That is,
students should go to CSUF first (by email, by
phone, or in person). Ask an RTVF advisor if a
course at the community college will transfer. If
the advisor says yes, get that in the form of a
    written memo or email.

13
Speech Communication
  • Total units for graduation
  • 120 units
  • 42 major units
  • 51 GE units
  • 27 free electives
  • Lower Division courses
  • H-Comm 102, 200, 235 or 236

14
Speech Communication
  • Areas of Emphasis
  • Persuasion Argumentation
  • Intercultural Communications
  • Organizational Communications
  • Interpersonal Communications

15
Speech Communications
  • Help students understand the difference between
Human Communication Studies and other majors in
the communications field. The shared WORD
    sometimes creates confusion.

16
Communications
  • Total units for graduation
  • 120 units
  • 36 major units
  • 12 collateral units
  • (upper division coursework
  • related to major)
  • 51 GE units
  • 21 free electives

17
Communications
  • All Concentrations
  • Advertising, Public Relations,
  • Entertainment/Tourism Studies, Journalism,
    Photocommunications have the same CORE
    requirements.
  • These concentrations are considered a upper
division major, therefore, there are only a few
lower division courses accepted in each area of
    study.

18
Communications
  • Out of the 120 units for the BA,  80 units are
required to be outside the areas of mass
communications, with 65 units in the liberal arts
and sciences.  As a result, students should limit
their mass media transfer courses to just the
    equivalents of lower division communications
    major requirements.

19
  • If students need to take units to transfer to
    CSUF
  • (in addition to GE certified units and
    equivalent communications courses)
they are encouraged to enroll in liberal arts
coursework, such as political science, history,
    social sciences, etc.

20
Communicative Disorders
  • Total units for graduation
  • 120 units
  • 42 major units
  • 51 GE units
  • 27 free electives

21
  • There are 4 CD courses that should be completed,
if possible, during the first two semesters of
    coursework _at_ CSUF.
  • HCOM 241, 242, 307, 344

22
  • It may be possible to take some of these CD
courses at a community college that has a
    speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA)
    program.

23
  • A strong GPA in major coursework is needed to go
on for graduate study in the major.
  • A Masters degree IS required to become a
    licensed, certified speech-language pathologist
    or audiologist.
  • Students should consider taking only two CD
courses each semester during their first two
semesters of transfer coursework _at_ CSUF.

24
  • The H-Comm department office is located in CP
    420. Call (714) 278-3617 to find out how to
    contact the CD undergraduate advisor.
  • One of the best strategies for contacting the
undergraduate advisor is to either email or call
him/her during their normally scheduled office
    hours.

25
Closing Remarks
  • As much as "one stop advising" is desirable, at a
university as large as CSUF that is simply not
    possible.
  • The good news is that students have 3 excellent
resources to help guide them to graduation.

26
  • Students should realize that coursework at CSUF
is more demanding than community college.
  • Recommend a 12-unit course load the first
    semester at CSUF.
  • Recommend that a student see an advisor every
    semester.
