Ask Yourself This
  • Where are we and where do we want to go?

3
Stages of Technological Innovation1
  • Level 1- Line of least resistance
  • Technology is applied in ways that do not
    threaten people.
  • Level 2- Merger
  • New technology merges with older technology to do
    what we can already do.
  • Level 3- New directions
  • Uses for technology grow out of the technologies
    themselves.

4
Level 1- Line of Least Resistance
  • Technology is applied in ways that do not
    threaten people.
  • Micro chip first showed up in digital watches,
    calculators.
  • Interesting novelties.

5
Level 2- Merger
  • New technology merges with older technology to do
    what we can already do.
  • Computers as word processors replacing
    typewriters.
  • Convenience and benefits increase.

6
Level 3- New directions
  • Uses for technology grow out of the technologies
    themselves.
  • Cell phones, internet.
  • Unexpected consequences and benefits.

7
Heres where we are
  • We are at stage 1 and just entering stage 2.
  • Our students are at stage 3!
  • We are Digital Immigrants.
  • They are Digital Natives.
  • Our students have changed radically. Todays
students are no longer the people our educational
system was designed to teach. (Prensky, 2001)

8
Digital Natives2
  • Have grown up with digital technology.
  • It is a seamless part of their lives.
  • They can program your VCR without looking at the
    instructions.

9
Digital Immigrants2
  • Recognize that technology is valuable, but didnt
    grow up digitally.
  • Its very use is an effort
  • Can live with or without it.
  • Digital technology isnt second nature.
  • Wheres that !!- manual?

10
Why Fully Integrate Technology?
  • Digital natives see how we teach as if we were
teaching how to harness a horse to car owners.
  • The shift is already that big.
  • Watch this short video
  • A Vision of Students Today

11
But how do we teach them?
  • Like other immigrants, we let them show us the
way to reach them in this digital land.
  • In return, we help them mature to adulthood and
light the passion for self education.
