Outline
  • Preparation
  • Slide Preparation
  • Talk Preparation
  • During The Talk

3
Preparation
  • Step 1 Work out what you are trying to say
  • Step 2 Consider the level of the audience and
    the allotted time for presentation
  • Step 3 Check the facility at the presentation
    site

Even very experienced presenters must put
adequate planning and preparation into giving a
talk
4
Slide Preparation (1)
  • Get the transparency/slide done well before the
    talk
  • Make sure it is clearly readable by someone with
average eyesight from the back of the room
  • Moving back though your slides is awful
  • Learn to use animation, slide link technique but
avoid distracting the audience with pointless
    animation

5
Slide Preparation (2)
  • Skipping slides in a computer is often awful
  • General presentation speed 1-2 min. per slide
(reduce the number of slides if needed)
  • Include page number for easy reference
  • Choose a simple font that is easy to read (24 pt
    or more)
  • Prepare handouts, which can contain a more
    detailed version of the talk

Example (1) Visual Makeover

Example (2)

Adding visual impact
9
Talk Preparation (1)
  • Practice your talk and many times as you can
  • If the rehearsal took too long, decide what to
leave out of the real presentation.
  • Get to the lecture room at least five minutes
before the session is to start

10
During The Talk (1)
  • Try to convince the audience that what you are
talking about is important and interesting. Do
    not apologize.
  • Give a very brief outline of the talk at the
    beginning
  • Speak to the audience, not to the screen
  • Have small pauses to allow audiences to catch up.

11
During The Talk (2)
  • No matter what you say the audience will try to
    read a transparency immediately
  • Use a pen or pointer to point out on your
transparency any items that need to be indicated
  • Give references where appropriate during your
    talk
  • Keep an eye on the clock, or your watch

12
During The Talk (3)
  • Give your answer to the whole audience, not just
    the questioner
  • Be confident !!

Good luck!
