Necessity is mother of innovation
  • What started as waste in world war
II was reused as fuel for cement manufacture
in 1990 due to conditions imposed by another
    gulf war for survival
  • The effectiveness of burning process- the main
process in cement manufacture-is determined to a
critical extend by the available fuels. For
reasons of cost a variety of fuels have been
introduced successfully by a Cement Company in
    United Arab Emirates.
  • One of the fuel used is a waste product from
petroleum oil industry, an unprocessed petroleum
oil fraction which used to be tipped in open air
sand ponds in Bahrain. The higher fraction of
crude oil, such as gasoline, kerosene etc, were
used in 1941 as fuels for vehicles and aircrafts
in the Second World War. Since that time the
heavy faction had been stored in sand ponds where
they have remained for the last 50 years exposed
    to all weathers.
  • This is a very thick, viscous, petroleum oil with
a consistency similar to bituminous material. To
recover this high sediment petroleum oil it was
necessary to install preheated equipment in the
sand ponds to raise the temperature to around
60-70 degree Celsius. This made the semi-liquid
petroleum oil pump-able and enabled it to be
transported to the storage tanks via coarse
    filter.
