3Camera Vessel Prototype (Herman Cease,)
10 slot thermally controlled crate for CCD
readout electronics (UIUC)
Cryo and Vacuum controls Herman, with help from
Rich
Feed-through board for CCD signals
Full size prototype was built by U. Chicago. It
arrived Fermilab in July Turned into a big
assembly effort operational in Oct.
06. Successfully readout CCDs Oct-Dec. Now
waiting for Ken to finish installation of heaters
and cooling. Testing multiple CCD readout in this
vessel is a critical step to development of the
FEE
Focal plane

This work could also lead to future
projects SNAP, LSST
6DECam Schedule
- Dependent on DOE funding and international
participation - Dark Energy Task force report came out in May,
very positive. - P5 recommended construction start for DES in
FY08. HEPAP endorsed this. - DOE and NSF still trying to figure out how to
proceed. - DOE Critical Decision Process schedule
- CD-0 received Oct. 05
- FY06 Preconceptual RD CD1 Directors review July
25-27, - FY07 RD, CD1 combined NSF-DOE Review April/May
07, - Combined CD2/CD3 Reviews Oct.-Dec. 07
- FY08 MIE Construction start
- FY09-10 Assemble and test camera vessel and
corrector - Ship to Chile and install on Blanco , first DES
observations Dec. 10
7DECam Funding Need Profile (Dec 06)(then yr ,
Overhead included)
Additional 7.7M in External funds from Non-DOE
sources
- DECam is applying for RD funds in FY07-FY08.
- Lab Management wants us to try to keep on
schedule - It is important that we get on the sky in 2010.
8DES Project needs
- Electrical Engineering Main challenge is lt10 e
noise. Terri Shaw is leading a group of 5 EEs
and coordinating with Spain and UIUC. Well
supported and making good progress. - Mechanical Engineering
- We need 4.5-5 FTE, we are getting 2.5-3 from
PPD, hopefully fractions will increase as CMS pix
ramps (Derylo) down and Numi chiller (Stefanik)
is replaced - Have been adding engineers from Chicago and
Argonne to pick up jobs that we dont have the
resources to cover at FNAL. FEA and FEM modeling
at Argonne is going quickly, starting to turn
over pieces of the camera vessel design to
Argonne too. - Rich Smith is our lead designer, keeping overall
model of the PF cage. - Have drafting support, drawings come out slowly,
but things are moving - Main crisis now We need more of Ken Schultzs
time project is waiting on him. December
effort DECam only got .33 FTE total not just
Ken - We need a wide range of skills vacuum,
soldering, plumbing, mechanical assembly, light
machining - Nominally we get 50 of Kens time for DES, but
other things (CMS, ILC, dicing in the wet lab
etc) come up and distract him. Also he cant do
overtime anymore without approval - We were hoping to add a person to work with Ken,
there is more than enough work for 100 of Ken
and/or two people split 50 each.

10DES Project needs
- Space and infrastructure
- 15 ft control room is filled with CCD testing
equipment and now has a door, floor has been
waxed adopting clean room protocol - Installation of Autofill LN2 system as originally
designed is complete! But, plan was always to
add two more cubes we need to figure out how to
do this (Ken) - Packaging moved from Lab A to Lab C South
- Packaging expert (Jim Wish) transferred and
replaced by Michelle Hrycyk - Changes are bad had many problems establishing
successful packaging again (yield is 1/4 from
many different problems) - ESD continues to be a serious problem, although
humidity control is better in Lab C - Had success packaging last week maybe things
have settled down - Lab C south used for installation of CCDs in
Multi CCD vessel It is on a cart.
