What Is ASME-IPTI Collegiate Council?
  • A selected group of students representing their
universities, whose purpose is to promote ASME
and IPTI to other students within their
    universities and others.
  • Each year the Collegiate Council takes on a
different project that helps promote IPTI among
colleges and other higher education institutions.
  • The council members convene twice a year.
  • The initial meeting in the Fall allows council
members the opportunity to choose a project for
    the upcoming year.

9
What Is ASME-IPTI Collegiate Council?
  • The second meeting in the Spring allows council
members the opportunity to fine tune and present
    their project deliverables.
  • In addition, members are given tours of various
    petroleum-related companies and guest speakers
from the industry give presentations the council
    members.
  • For Membership Applications, go to
  • www.asme-ipti.org

10
Collegiate Council Benefits
  • Networking A council member gets to meet
professionals and engineers working in the
petroleum industry. Furthermore you will get a
chance to meet other students who share your
    passion for engineering.
  • Knowledge Transfer Develop skills that can be
used in your career. Learn more about what the
    industry has to offer.

11
Collegiate Council Benefits
  • Resume Benefits Participation in a professional
society at this level when you are still in
    college will boost your resume.
  • Leadership Council Members are ambassadors for
    their respective colleges. Enhanced opportunity
to apply for ASME IPTI internships
  • Financial Enhanced opportunities for scholarships

The Petroleum Industry for Mechanical Engineers
19
Booming Industry
  • High demand
  • Employing many new engineers including Mechanical
    Engineers
  • Increased growth
  • Companies are able to pay their engineers more
money than engineers in other industries/disciplin
    es
  • Large salaries with superior benefits

20
Booming Industry
21
Aging Workforce
  • Most engineers in the petroleum industry are
    approaching retirement age quickly
  • Many leadership opportunities will be opening up
    in the next few years
  • For an entry-level engineer
  • Capable of advancing in the management chain
faster than in other industry disciplines
  • Enhance salary faster

22
Interesting Facts
  • Travel Opportunities
  • Current oil supply/demand gives way to Petroleum
    exploration in other countries
  • Demand for employees willing to travel
  • Visit other countries at the companys expense

23
Interesting Facts
  • Cutting-edge Technology
  • Development of compact- separators
  • Used for downhole and subsea gas/liquid
    separation
  • Implementation of ROVs
  • These robotic vessels are used for deep sea
exploration when looking for oil in the sea floor

24
Sectors of the Petroleum Industry
  • Upstream
  • Involves practice of finding crude oil and
    natural gas
  • Referred to as the Exploration and Production
    sector
  • This discipline includes
  • Upstream Research and Development

27
Companies in the Industry
  • Operators
  • Companies in charge of the exploration and
    petroleum production.
  • They can be classified into major or minor based
upon their production capabilities or market
    capital.

28
Companies in the Industry
  • Service Companies
  • Service companies act as a counterpart to the
    operators by providing critical services.
