  • The Verb a verb is a word that expresses action
    or a state of being.

Three types of verbs
  • Main or helping verbs
  • Action or linking verbs
  • Transitive or intransitive

Helping verbs
  • Helping verbs help the main verb express action
    or state of being
  • Main verbs and helping verbs together are called
    verb phrases.
  • Copy helping verb chart on page 348 in notebook.
    You will need to know these verbs by heart.
  • Lets do exercise 1 orally on page 348

Action Verbs
  • An action verb expresses either physical or
    mental activity.

Linking verb
  • A linking verb links or connects the subject to a
    word or group that identifies or describes the
    subject.
  • Copy linking verb charts on page 351 into
    notebook. Please study there will be a quiz over
    these words.

Transitive Verb
  • A transitive verb is a verb that expresses an
    action directed toward a person, place, thing, or
    idea.
  • The action passes from the doer (the subject) to
    the receiver of the action.
  • Words that receive the action of a transitive
    verb are called objects.

Transitive Verb
  • Group activity groups of three, write sentences
    with transitive verbs. One student provides the
    subject, one student provides the verb, one
    student provides the object.

Intransitive verb
  • An intransitive verb tells something about the
    subject or expresses action without the action
    passing to a receiver, or object.
  • Group activity Each group will choose one of
    the 5 verbs learned and present a lesson about
    that verb type. The lesson should include a
    definition of the verb type, a list of verbs of
    that type, and three example sentences using that
    type of verb. Group members are responsible for
    answering student questions on that verb type.

Adverb
  • An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an
    adjective, or another adverb.
  • Adverbs answer the following questions
  • Where?
  • When?
  • How?
  • How often?
  • How long?
  • To what extent?
  • How much?

  • Adverbs may come before, after, or between the
    words they modify

Preposition
  • A preposition is a word that shows the
    relationship between a noun or a pronoun and
    anther word in the sentence.

Prepositional Phrase
  • A preposition has at least one noun or pronoun as
    an object. This noun or pronoun is called the
    object of the preposition.
  • The preposition, its object and any modifiers of
    the object make up a prepositional phrase.
  • The object of the preposition usually follows the
    preposition.

  • A Conjunction is a word that joins words or
    groups of words
  • An easy way to remember coordinating conjunctions

Correlative Conjunctions
  • A correlative conjunction are pairs of conjuntion
    that join words or word groups that are used in
    the same way.
