  • Anxiety Disorders - A condition in which intense
    anxiety or fear keeps a person from functioning
    normally
  • Personality Disorders A variety of
    psychological conditions that affect a persons
    ability to get along with others
  • Mood Disorders A disorder in which a person
    undergoes changes in mood that seem inappropriate
    or extreme

  • These disorders affect their thinking, moods,
    personal relationships, and control of sudden
    urges.
  • Schizophrenia one of the most common
    personality disorders in which people lose
    contact with reality.

Mood Disorders
  • Mood disorders include bipolar disorder
    (manic-depressive disorder) and clinical
    depression
  • People with bipolar disorder go from feeling
    upbeat and energetic to feeling desolate and
    tired for no apparent reason.

  • Depression is a serious condition that involves
    your body, mood, and thoughts.
  • Affects one in eight people in their teen years
  • Affects more adolescent females than males

  • Positive Responses
  • Friends and family may recognize depression and
    offer love, kindness, or support
  • May offer to listen
  • May encourage the individual to seek professional
    help
  • Negative Responses
  • People who do not recognize depression may
    respond with criticism or scolding
  • People believe that depression is an attitude
    problem or that the person is being moody

DEPRESSION - CAUSES
  • Genetics - Inherit genes making it more likely
    that you will suffer from depression
  • Family and Environmental - Negative, stressful,
    or unhappy family atmosphere
  • Social Conditions - Poverty, homelessness, and
    community violence
  • Life Events - Death of a close family member or
    friend

  • Undiagnosed Learning Disabilities
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Physical Illness
  • Substance Abuse
  • Medical Conditions - can affect hormone balance
    and effect on mood

NEUROTRANSMITTERS
  • Chemicals which assist in transmitting messages
    between nerve cells in the brain
  • Regulate mood and when not available in
    sufficient quantities, can cause depression

TYPES OF DEPRESSION
  • Major depression - usually short lasting in
    duration but can be intense and occur in bouts
    that last for weeks at a time
  • Dysthymia - Less severe and linger at a low level
    for years
  • Adjustment disorder with depressed mood -
    reaction to a specific life event which takes a
    longer than expected time frame in order to
    adjust

  • Depressed mood or sadness most of the time
  • Lack of energy and feeling tired all the time
  • Inability to enjoy things that used to bring
    pleasure
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Irritability, anger, or anxiety
  • Inability to concentrate

  • Some can also have eating disorders

    longer, and interferes with life
  • Occasional sadness is a normal emotion

  • Reactions are brief and go away with little time
    or care
