Ultrasonic Testing is the process of transmitting
high-frequency sound waves into a material in
order to detect changes in the materials
properties. Ultrasonic Testing uses sound waves
to detect defects or flaws inside material. These
sound waves travel through the material with some
energy loss (attenuation) and are reflected and
refracted at interfaces. The echoes are then
analysed to define and locate discontinuities.

Time of Flight Diffraction
Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is a UT
Technique uses the time of flight of an
ultrasonic pulse to find the location of a
reflector. A pair of ultrasonic transducers is
being used to find the Time of Flight. The
transmitter emits low frequency waves that
propagate at an angle. They only divert back to
the receiver if they hit a defect.
