Title: CS Honors Undergraduate Research Program Project Checkpoint

1
CS Honors Undergraduate Research Program -
Project Checkpoint
  • Tingyu Thomas Lin
  • Advisor Professor Deborah Estrin
  • Date of Presentation TBD

2
Overview of Project
  • It's hard to figure out where exactly motes are,
but the ENSBox platform has mostly solved this
with the ability to localize its own nodes and
    other acoustic sources.
  • The purpose of my research is to integrate motes
    into the ENSBox system to
  • use ENSBox as means to localize motes
  • have a mote network trade information with boxes
  • (potentially have mote network help in acoustic
    localization)

3
Where I Thought I would Be By Checkpoint
  • ENSBox and single mote communicating
  • Localize the single mote
  • Issue command at ENSBox to start process
  • ENSBox tells mote to chirp
  • Mote chirps
  • ENSBoxes localize mote from chirp
  • Verify accuracy of ENSBoxs estimate
  • Have started working on localizing multiple motes
  • includes making/borrowing mote network

4
Where I Actually Am At By Checkpoint
  • Have not started working with ENSBox at all
  • Have laptop (running MoteNic) communicating with
    mote
  • Almost able to have my laptop tell mote to chirp
  • Code is currently broken (probably will be fixed
    by 3/17)
  • In terms of Deliverables
  • Just the broken code

5
Why Im Not Where I Thought Id Be
  • Biggest Issue Time
  • Didnt start early on learning basics
  • e.g. TinyOS and nesC, writing code for Emstar
  • Initially didnt ask for help when I should have
  • Once spent 2 hours trying to fix a config issue
that Mike fixed in a matter of minutes
  • Proceeded to repeat this mistake a few more times
  • Other commitments
  • Classes, life
  • Difficulty
  • I knew it wouldnt be easy, but I didnt act
    accordingly
  • Ive rectify these issues, but only recently
  • Next quarter will be more productive

6
What More I Expect To Do
  • The bare minimum I set for myself
  • Localize single motes
  • And then localize multiple motes
  • Which includes making/borrowing mote network
  • Analysis of ENSBox platforms ability to estimate
    mote locations
  • Extra work if I have time
  • See how mote network ENSBoxes can improve node
    localization
